With you 100%. Reminds of stuff that used to impress me when I was at college, but being a bit older now, I just want melody, harmony, atmosphere and heart.

Luckily my friend attended a drum workshop with Dave Weckl. After the workshop, he purchased the drums Dave played and then sold them to me. Black Yamaha Oak customs, 7 piece. As far as this song goes, I agree with your assessment. I am fond of some jazz with some of the Spyro Gyra albums being my favorite. Particularly Morning Dance, Catching The Sun and Free Time. Just curious, Justin, have you heard any of these albums?

I'm not familiar with them. I think I have some Spyro Gyra vinyl but i'm not super familiar with them.

I was a Weckl fanatic in high school, and it forced me to enjoy this vein of 80s fusion. I saw Chick's Elektric band live and all that. And to be sure, Chick is in a category of his own, even if he put out an album of lullabies. The thing is, I can only ever meet this kind of fusion halfway. It does have a definite melody which is nice, but not something that grips. In the end the instrumental musicality has a clinical effect, it is not a show, its a *demonstration* of what *can* be done on these instruments, both as commited individuals on their own and as an ensemble, if one has commited oneself to the instrument and the genre. Ok, but is that entertaining? Is it enrichment? Some of the unison lines are reminiscent of Scott Henderson and his Tribal Tech project, but the song as a whole remains kind of sterile. Scott's work (Gary Willis on bass I think?) is way more compelling because he goes wild not clinical. He grabs you by the throat and tries to explore and make statements with his densely noted lines and phrases. There's a difference. Virtuosity is only a tool in the toolbox for a greater good. Ideally

Thanks for the input. I respect your comments, I just wanted to see what you had to say about the playing. Dave is a amazing drummer, he really has changed the way I play the drums. When I first played for him he completely noticed how I was playing, and changed my technique and how I played the drums. He really is a great and humble human being and is a master at his craft. With all that being said, yes this style requires and certain taste in music. The groove was moving to me. Many people don't like long drawn out songs, but for me its cool. Well yes I will always take Rush over anything, lol but I assume you appreciate the musicianship. Again so respect you reaction. And thanks.

If you’ve been the one requesting the Simon Phillips one and this one, then thank you. Very much enjoying these. I’m sure people like Justin were surrounded by stuff like this in school but not me so I’m loving it!

LOL -- Hold Your Fire over this? That cuts deep, Justin! 😄 But I agree, the Simon Phillips track was way better in terms of interesting changes, melodies and development. And Weckl's playing was very slick but didn't blow me away. It sounded basically four on the floor, but with some displaced notes and fills. Anyways, when I hear stuff like this I feel like giving these people a Steely Dan record and saying, "Now listen how to put all that talent to use in an actually well-composed and crafted song." Or "Did you lose your late night talk show house band gig?"

This music is not cool for me at home. But being in a venue listening to this live is a totally different experience. Seen Weckl 30 times and loved every minute. But I don’t listen to it in the car

You echoed my own sentiments pretty closely. I absolutely love Dave. Always have. Musically, I’m just not into virtuosity for its own sake. Yes, they can all play their asses off. And? It sounds like a music school project. Or a track from Dave’s music-minus-one package that so many of us played to in the late 80s. I’m speaking as a lifelong fusion fan. I love notes, if they are moving in some way. Really great playing, that’s for sure. As always, not saying I’m right about anything. There is no right or wrong. Glad it was requested, because it’s always a joy to watch Dave do his thing.

Justin, you're allowed to say wankery, I doubt anyone will be offended. It is of course a tad vulgar but entirely appropriate on this occasion.

Your going to hate me for this. Its just a jam any half decent musician can do for an hour until you get bored. No composition. For f sake it sounds like a band warm up. Sorry im just a bitter and twisted guitarist ❤
