My first bartending job I got was at a national park, hired sight unseen, and was given 3 free meals, housing, $12 an hour, tips and full benefits. We were a simple saloon in the Mojave slow as shit, but really helped me learn the ropes in a controlled environment. Cannot recommend the seasonal resort circuit enough.

I got a job at a high volume nightclub with no experience. The owner knew me because I was a a regular and wanted me to work for him. At the time I was working as a hotel housekeeper. 3 months later I'm doing really good though i still need to work on getting faster. I been working on this by keeping the rack organized. Most people want basic drinks just to get drunk so I know how to make most of the drinks asked. I love it when its busy.n its Better money then I ever made before(:

Dude it depends where and what hotel you’re talking about…. I worked as an apprentice/Barback at one of the nicest hotels and best cocktail bars in dc and the education I learned there is unbelievable. I learned how to tend bad first before I learned to provide service and make cocktails. I learned how to be efficient, make everything from scratch. Break ice. Proper technique, poise, verbiage, spirit and cocktail knowledge. How to work clean and how to properly mis en place your prep. It was the most invaluable experience I had behind bar and it made me an assassin behind the bar!

Hi Dave! Not quite bar related, but I fully agree about the interview process. I applied for an appointment to my county's Civil Grand Jury (Civil, not criminal. Huge difference in duties, and the appointment is for 1 year). Since there were over 70 people at the initial introduction, most had tried out a few times prior, I had no experience, AND there were many former Grand Jurors there trying for another appointment, I knew I had zero chance of making it. However, if I continue with the interview process etc, I can gain some experience and apply NEXT year with a better idea of what they are looking for. my interview was in a small room at a small table with 3 municipal court judges. Since I knew I didn't have a chance of getting in, I was totally relaxed and stress-free, able to be my personable self. I NAILED THE FREAKING INTERVIEW!!! First attempt and I am now a sitting Grand Juror! Once my appointment is over (provided I don't get held over for the next term as well), I'm going back into bartending. I worked for a staffing company but almost all of my assignments were approx. 40 miles away and low pay, mostly non-tipping type events, I think I'll take your advice and apply to some of the chain restaurants nearby. Hey Ada...yep, I would and I have. I love finding someone personable who I can mold and teach using my standards. There's no bad habits to break and they are always extremely enthusiastic to learn.

Hi Dave, I've been bar tending for almost a year now. I work Saturday and Sunday open to close. I have been recently informed that I need to "pick up the pace". No one seems to know how I can do so without giving away drinks or making a huge mess. I was under the impression that I was doing ok. No one ever has an empty glass and I never really take a break despite working 12 hours straight on Saturday. Can you maybe make a video about how to pick up the pace? If this video already exists send me a link or just have a chat with me in the comments. I have a feeling you know better than my boss or anyone else on how to move faster behind the bar. I do work at a private club but hey maybe take a trip out here and come in and train me 😂
