Well this has caused a little bit of butt hurt over on Facebook around the definition of the word "polish". So in case it bleeds over onto KZbin... and for the benefit of those argumentative souls, for the purposes of this video I am personally working from the following: "A polish in car care is a product that refines paintwork by abrasion."
@ForensicDetailing5 жыл бұрын
the detailing scene associates the word polish with only meaning abrasive. the industry that makes products does not always do that though (more so the further back you go as well).. there are many polish formulations which dont contain abrasives,for example ive seen spray wax formulations and patents described as polish for example (an no abrasive materials are in the patent)... In terms of is autoglym super resin polish a polish.. well as above they could call it a polish if they want whether its a abrasive or not. but nowadays we (the more dedicated consumer) want/expect polish to mean abrasive ... in terms of does it contain abrasives.. according to autoglym when I spoke to them directly face to face.. yes it does, small amounts of very fine abrasives and resins / gloss enchancers etc. the paint depth thing is perhaps not the best way to see its got abrasives. If you did that test with say sf3800 (a pure abrasive) your PDG reading wont move (possibly), but that doesnt mean SF3800 does not contain abrasives. Just to fine to measure it, and you leave carrier as well.. Its too precise a thing to try and measure really. wet sand down your panel with p600 and machine it with SRP or do it by hand. keep going long enough and the sanding marks will go, and that main chunk of polished paintwork should stay polished forever (some will go back to haze or some sanding marks will come back, but some of the correction/improvement will be permanent) but in summary is SRP a polish. yes but best way to understand what it is, is simply the description on the back of the product. (in fairness to brands as well, its hardly mass marketing jargon to name SRP the way its named. The word polish itself pretty dull. They gotta call it something.. Maybe if they called it ceramic super polish fair play :) ) gr8 stuff

Hey Jon! Welcome to the party! Thanks for taking the time to come on and share your thoughts and experiences. I appreciate that 👍 I do stand by everything I tried in this vid. That small section took a hell of a lot of polishing by machine, three lots off camera to try and get some sort of cut but it just wouldn't. The PDG is the best way I had to do the test, and I've seen machine use finishing compounds take microns off so would have expected a hand use product to do at least the same if not more (being hand based). This vid wasnt in any way a dig at SRP, it was just my own little experiment that I wanted to share. I believe SRP is one of those products that everyone should have, and there are truly very few of those around. In terms of the info out of AG, I actually believe that there is a formulation difference between old bottles and new, and that may be where the miscommunication had come from. I also agree with your comment on the fact that people interpret the word polish in a couple of different ways. But for me it has to be abrasive. Cheers again for taking time out to come and post on my channel I really do appreciate it 👍🍻

@@DetailingandtheBeast it doesnt come accross as a dig at SRP, its a good experiment I think as well. was about 2 years ago roughly when AG said it had some abrasives in it. you never know they loiter around YT they may even be able to confirm. you would think 3 sets would perhaps take a micron off. I would maybe try a stiffer pad.. not sure.. Im gonna try and get up to letchworth at some point this year and I will ask them about it see if the latest formulation has abrasives still.

Interesting video (I am a bit late to the party!) One thing that Autoglym do say is that you can use it on their Life Shine product and your test shows that it will remove little or nothing hence it would seem safe to use on a dealer applied sealant. Going back a bit (I haven't used it for a while) I do know that it "cleans" paintwork because you can see the dirt on your applicator after application. For those of us who like to look after our cars but not to full detailing standards, a mild cleaner like this is ideal because you won't damage the paint. Autoglym also say that you can use it as often as you like which would confirm the idea that it has little or no cut. I am happy to call it a polish because it removes dirt and imparts gloss.

Quite right, if it makes the surface smoother and shinier then it fits the definition of a polish EVEN if it only does that by removing dirt or contaminants and not lacquer

D and the B, Jon (FDC) I'm a huge fan of you both but I have to say I disagree with you. To some extent it's a generational thing, I'd bet I'm fairly safe in saying I've been cleaning cars since before either of you were born, since 1974 in fact. The definition of a polish is 'a substance used to give something a smooth and shiny surface when rubbed in' And that says it all. SRP IS a polish whether it has cut or not because it fulfills that definition. Compounds are also polishes but they achieve their end result by abrasion. As an add on I'd liked to have seen what SRP could have achieved with a firmer cutting pad. Just as a thought, shoe polish is a polish but it doesn't abrade your shoe leather, quite the opposite in fact, it achieves it's result by building up a layer of polish on the shoe surface, ask any ex military man/woman and they will tell you exactly how to 'bull' your toecaps! It gave us the term 'spit and polish' I think some of the confusion comes because we used to call one item a polish and the other a polishing compound but people are just too lazy with their language these days especially in the detailing fraternity! Here endeth my two penneth worth! 😂

Thanks. I now know it's safe to use it on a new car to prep for the EGP. I have used the Paint Renovator as the abrasive polish where necessary.

Very interesting video mate! I ran some tests on SRP in my bodyshop yesterday to see if it cuts or just fills imperfections and it did make a big difference to an old faded panel once applied. I then used very strong solvent degreaser and water degreaser which I use before painting a panel and the shine was still present all be it slightly less so I proceeded to spray a solvent basecoat over it and it didn't react which it would of if there was any silicon/fillers or wax still present. My conclusion was inconclusive

Exactly what I needed. Just finished a bottle of SRP I've had for ages, on a Titan Silver E46 BMW, which has had a super clean and 1st stage medium compound with medium pad on a Kestrel DA polisher. I was hoping for a little more correction from the SRP. It's shiny, but it hasn't had the 'finishing cut' I was hoping for. The SRP label doesn't mention scratch removal, but I've always associated the 'creamy' preparations with some level of cut. I grew up with hand-application 'T-Cut Plus Turtle Wax' as the standard. Now, it's a minefield of potions, lotions, pads and polishers. I'm tempted to replace the SRP with MER Ultimate: 'Conditioning agents nourish and restore dull paintwork, removing micro-scratches and swirls. Contains mild abrasives to remove micro scratches and other minor defects from paint surfaces.'

I used SRP on a cellulose painted car back in the 80s the car was red and it definitely removed paint as the cloth went red. Even if you used a proper polish I think you would have to remove a lot of clear coat before you could actually measure the difference. A micron is quite a big unit when you are dealing with the smoothness of a surface.

@DetailingandtheBeast4 жыл бұрын
I assume you are talking about the resin fillers. But yes if you top that off with a wax, the effect will last a bit longer. But ultimately you are only "masking" the problem and it will re-show itself after a few weeks/months/washes.

To remove the fine sanding marks, Koch F5.01 or 6.01 and then to finish M3.02 Alternatively if you want to do it in one then Scholl S20 black.

Very interesting test and informative because I always thought SRP had abrasives in it, or was that the older version as the more recent product doesn't produce as much white powder as the older version.?

From my own testing I've found that it removes some oxidation and the fillers mostly masking swirls etc. AutoGlym told me originally that it didn't, then after I made my video they contacted me and said it does 😂 Either way, it's a good product but don't expect it to do real paint correction.
