Looks like this video has inspired a lot of people to "buy" some kites, but you all should do a little bit more research unless you get pro training. Anyways, I'm self-taught watched a lot of videos and this is what I did and learned: 1.) Shopped all brands and prices, but settled on a Peter Lynn 2.3m hype. Easy to handle 2 liner and you can really learn the basics of steering and control. In good wind 10+ knots you can really feel the power and yank it through the power eye and even do loops. Never any danger of getting dragged. What's power eye? Go study windsurf video. Then learn to one hand the bar for 12 and 3 o'clock positions. Make all your mistakes with this. Crash, self-launch, self-lands, loop it,...etc. 2.) Mastered control, wind direction, and respect the wind. Time to move up to a serious "power" double the area and twice the cost. A Peter Lynn 4.0m Hornet. Yes, this thing can easily knock you down with winds over 5 knots. At 20 knots you can feel it lift you up with kite at apex. However, you learn real control, fear the wind and "lie on your back" to maintain control. A two handle set-up with 4 lines, so you can learn braking, and directional braking. Fly and steer in reverse(can't do with 3 liner). I also learned serious line management. Went from 2 hrs(untangling) to 15 minutes set-up and 15 minutes pack up time. Also, great for low wind conditions 3-5 knots. It will go up, but will take steering skills to keep from falling. At this point I feel I have control of the wind. My next step is either: a.) getting a harness and doing some serious jumping; b.) getting a landboard; c.) go into the ocean to do some body drags. (yes, I know this kite is not water recoverable)
@luckyrook12464 жыл бұрын
That's cool. My first kite was a 9m. And I died.
@test50933 жыл бұрын
What is "power eye" ? I've been kitesurfing for years and I have never heard that term. Google doesn't provide any answers either. Do you simply mean the high power zone in the middle of the window?
@trexinvert3 жыл бұрын
@@test5093 YEs, exactly. I doubt most kiters actually dare to move the kite right through the center/power zone/eye(like in Hurricane). There is no reason to do that, but for a beginner they may have no idea. Ever seen "fail" kite surfing video where the poor beginner get's dragged over the sand/sidewalk/highway,...etc. That's why having a little trainer is so useful. Make your mistakes with a "toy" vs a full size 8-16 sq meter "unstoppable wind machine".
@trexinvert3 жыл бұрын
@@luckyrook1246 That's crazy. Even with my 4m, it could be dangerous with 15 knot winds. These large kites are like being pulled by a boat. You must be in total absolute control. Anybody watching this video must know that these guys are experts with many years of training and learning from their mistakes.
@test50933 жыл бұрын
@@trexinvert I've taught a handful of people and in my opinion the use of the trainerkite is limited. It's mostly to teach them about the wind window and steering and after about an hour there is nothing more to be gained (for the purpose of kitesurfing). The bigger kite is so much bigger and slower that any real skill with the smaller kite just doesn't translate. Especially if it's without a depower system. Nothing can happen really if you practice with the big kite in swallow water in 16 knots. And we do actually steer the kite right through the powerzone. Right away actually in lesson 1. With learning how to bodydrag down wind you steer the kite right into the powerzone. And for tight carving turns in 15-20 knots a downloop is the only way to go. And in 40 knots the mega loop guys will pull a loop right through the powerzone mid-jump.

@cyberanswer6 жыл бұрын
Extreme :) What does the quick bar pump do before you steer the kite up? Is that equivalent to the small upwind turn before resetting then progressively loading in wake style kiting? I don't know why that is done either? I can see it tensions the lines but if you're loading up anyway, what's the point? I guess it just works? Just a note to people, when you're tired, stop. Ask most people who've had an accident, they'll tell you they were tired and decided to throw one more trick. Ignore your friend saying, "One more" or listen at your peril.
@DavidUrsell6 жыл бұрын
As your speed increases so does the apparent wind acting on the kite. When you go for a high jump you build up as much speed as you can. The kite behaves differently with different wind speeds so the pump allows us to find the sweet spot where you should apply pressure to maximise lift without distorting the kite and getting maximum turning from the kite without any stalling of the wing tip, also a bar pump can be used to encourage airflow over the kite so when you turn the kite will be more responsive

@DavidUrsell6 жыл бұрын
You can use these kites too effectively parachute down hills in no wind. However! If it's only a small jump and a big enough wind change you may not have time to reposition kite to land softly. So we fly in only onshore clean wind. Never offshore or gusty wind doing high level tricks 👍

I am only a normal kiter, that's why I am asking but isnt this dangerous? It looks like its so much fun tho :D
@DavidUrsell2 жыл бұрын
Anything can be dangerous and a novice to try these tricks could be, however we've been practising these maneuvers for over 2 decades so we're well practised. Glad you enjoy the video and if you want to build up to these tricks, do so cautiously with professional assistance in lessons or experienced kiter friends 🤙🤙

@@DavidUrsell Maybe I will. I am into normal 2 line and 4 line kiting but always was interested into kite boarding and this also looks like much fun. Really enjoyed the pov recordings. It really gives a sense of height. :)

this is insanely dangerous
@DavidUrsell6 жыл бұрын
taylor budd yes if you didn't know what you were doing this is very dangerous you have to trust you equipment and be completely in tune with it like any extreme sport. But when you are it feels incredible and the risk is very minimal

David Ursell I want to try it but am scared I’ll fly away 😂
@DavidUrsell6 жыл бұрын
LewisR-MAKE OUT HILL that's the plan later on, but start with a small kite and it's perfectly safe. Go to a good kite land board school for advice!

You'd have to get lessons from a kite school. It's very dangerous to fly big kites with no experience. So build up slowly and stay safe!

@DavidUrsell6 жыл бұрын
wilkothewiz frinton on sea dude, do you kite land board? It's a small spot but we enjoy it!
@wilkothewiz6 жыл бұрын
David Ursell, I’ll have to Google that spot, Although I am from the UK, I now live in Sydney. I kite board on water mainly (Not the Greatest at it) and have snowboarded with the kite in Australian Alps region which was good. But never been on a land board. Something to look at. You make it look extremely easy.
@DavidUrsell6 жыл бұрын
wilkothewiz we've just been doing it for a very long time so to us it's very natural. Grab yourself a good landboard and see if he can find a nice area by the coast with smooth wind. Start slow and you will have fun
