I once dated a guy who had an ex girlfriend attack him when he was trying to push her off she fell and hit her head...she was white he was black....the police did not believe his story he was arrested and charged and convicted of domestic battery which is a felony despite the fact that she refused to cooperate with the state and did not show up to court...he could not get a job through any source but a temp agency for 8 years....he tried multiple times to get the charge expunged from his record...the e.g. girlfriend even wrote letters to the governor...he was never granted an expungment....the word felon will change your life forever.....this is America....a guy trying to support his kids can't get a job....but bankers who launder money and commit fraud are let off with slaps on the wrist and return back to their seats of power...our system is rigged against people of color and low income....

For every person who was trying to get it together, there were about five who just engaged in criminal behavior because they loved the rush. And for every officer who tried to help, there are TEN who think their job is to just lock folks up. But don't get it twisted. I supervised everyone from child sexual predators to multiple murderers. You seem to think everyone that was locked up was just because they sang to loud in the church choir. You've never had somebody come to your office to tell you about how they've been raped by someone who you supervise, or how the husband is beating them up, or molesting his own children. Or had to deal with one of your people who killed someone in a DWI incident. You'll never know what its like to try to get a young woman out of the prostitution game only to find out she's been murdered. Who have you helped find a job, or helped get his citizenship paper work squared away so he can get his SSI? So don't come at me sideways. I helped when I could, and even helped when people were wrongly accused of stuff. In my time, I was counselor, advisor, big brother, employment agent, sounding board, and when I had to be I was an asshole. But more than that, I always tried to be fair. Tell me how fair you'll be when you talk to the guy whose got multiple child victims across three countries, and says he's not guilty of anything. I can't make this stuff up. Before you judge, know who you're judging. And as for how I feel? I feel good.

Viliam Shimkus , let him go. I noticed he didn't even respond. Maybe he's had a chance to think. He reacted without thinking. Having the wrong idea about what people do is only bad if you keep that way of thinking even after you've been shown your error. That was a very big part of what I did, just trying to point folks in the right direction. If you can help at least one person, then you've done well, you have a great weekend..

I got to see this movie in nyc and it was AMAZING and Daveed and Rafael came after doing this interview to do a q and a at the theater. It is so layered and suspenseful, but still really funny. I can not recommend it enough

I really liked this movie, I got a DUI a year ago, first time I've ever been in this kind of trouble. its been continued for a year now but I face it in 4 days, it ruined my career and ever since I've been struggling to stay above water. The bad thing is being charged with something tempts people more to do bad things because they either can't get an honest job or make anything of themselves because of just one mistake. I hadn't drink anything in 2 years and decided to one time at the wrong time and its ruined my life.

Also important to think about... Collins is labeled a "convicted felon" for life for abusing authority as a doorman at a bar by brutalizing a white man who broke the law by taking his drink outside the premises and refusing to take the drink back inside. (There's more to that scene, for those who have not seen the film.) Collins witnesses a white police officer abuse his authority by shooting & killing a black man (who may have committed no crime at all, from what we see in the film) and does not suffer the same fate as Collins.

My county recently saw a lawsuit against a for profit probation company. We won and they can no longer operate here. My state also saw a federal judge demand that people have their licenses returned if they were taken as a result of inability to pay court debts. They deemed it unconstitutional and basically running debtor jails. 2 in a row. Sometimes the law works for the people.

I cried like a bitch TWICE during Blindspotting. Not gunna spoil anything, but first was the scene where the two of them are having an argument after that crazy thing happened at that party, and the second was a scene shortly after where they explain what “blindspotting” means. As a white person who can ashamedly say they thought they understood, I didn’t really GET IT until this movie. Once I finally got it, it ripped my heart right out of my chest. I had to pause the movie right there and sob for 10 minutes. I had seen a lot of movies about racial injustice, but this is the first one I’d seen that highlights the mentality behind the action itself. A mentality which not only causes these things to happen, but also causes inaction from people who are tolerant and understanding enough to not do these things themselves, but sheltered enough to assume it’s a rare thing and that most of the time it’s justified. It made me feel angry and also gave me a sense of hopelessness for my generation of adults and the ones before me, and makes me think that the only hope is for the next generation of adults coming up who maybe have enough exposure to not have this mentality in any real dangerous way.
