Dave Fenley performs "Grandpa (Tell Me 'Bout The Good Old Days)," originally sung by The Judds. Available now on all streaming platforms!
Lyrics:
Grandpa, tell me 'bout the good old days
Sometimes it feels like this world's gone crazy
And Grandpa, take me back to yesterday
When the line between right and wrong
Didn't seem so hazy
Did lovers really fall in love to stay
And stand beside each other, come what may?
Was a promise really something people kept
Not just something they would say and then forget
Did families really bow their heads to pray
Did daddies really never go away?
Oh, Grandpa, tell me 'bout the good old days
Grandpa, everything is changing fast
We call it progress, but I just don't know
And Grandpa, let's wander back into the past
And paint me the picture of long ago
Did lovers really fall in love to stay
And stand beside each other, come what may?
Was a promise really something people kept
Not just something they would say and then forget
Did families really bow their heads to pray
Did daddies really never go away?
Oh, Grandpa, tell me 'bout the good old days
Oh, Grandpa, tell me 'bout the good old days

Hey friends! Thanks so much for the overwhelming response to this song. For all of you dealing with loss, my heart goes out to you. I only wanted to put this song out as a reminder to the world how family values used to be so important. What I’ve received in return other than amazing support, is stories of people who are missing a loved one. I’m so grateful for all the stories of love that y’all are sharing on here. I encourage you to read other comments and help each other out. None of us are alone here. Maybe we can take this small opportunity to love one another. It’s a safe place that only a special few will prolly ever see. If you feel like sharing this song with someone who might need it, I’d also be eternally grateful. I could use your help to reach more people. SPREAD LOVE LIKE PEANUT BUTTER

Modern country is trash. Has no real meaning. This is simply a cover yet the way the guy sings the song puts some real emotion into the song that you don’t hear from these new punks that are cramming out music nowadays

Hey y’all, my family!! I am so proud to share this. I loved this song as a kid. And it means even more to me now. This song isn’t really about grandpa...it’s about how far we’ve strayed from the simple, good values that the previous generation represents. I long for the days where we loved more than we fought. I love this song. I hope you do too. SLLPB Ps. This is my wife, mom, and dad in the video. They were troopers. Haha

Amazing job, brother. My momma was from Lufkin...she would’ve loved your voice. My granddaddy (her dad) was a guitar player, she was a pianist, and I myself am a bassist. So I would be so bold to say that Lufkin produces some musical talent! Keep that good stuff coming, brother. Oh and go have some Lufkin BBQ and tell me how awesome it is! Love that joint!

My daughter danced with my dad to this song at her wedding. Back story, he had a stroke 5 years ago & refused to work with rehab, until my daughter came to visit and he got out of bed and started trying to walk again, working with rehab to one day be able to dance at her wedding. This song combined with his pure joy in his eyes as he stood out of his wheelchair to dance with her had the entire room in tears. Thank you for such a beautiful song.

The evening after my mom died, I walked onto my back patio and in my yard were so many dragonflies fluttering all around.. never before that evening had I even seen them there. Dragonflies were moms” thing “, she even had them tattooed on herself. I believe it was mom visiting my that evening saying Hello,I love you and I’m all right.. free of all that ailed me. This song has me bawling.. every time I hear it. 9/20/55 - 4/27/23 💜💜 Miss you Mom 💜💜 Love you to the Moon and Back. Forever!

My grandfather was a foreman on the oil fields of west Texas. He was a quiet man most of the time and was sick the last few years of his life. The thing I remember the most about him were his fishing trips he used to take me on and the stories he gave me to hold on to. They weren't just stories. They were life lessons and advice for later. He knew that then. I didn't realize that until I was older. Thank you B.W. Pruitt. Miss you so much.

I tried as hard as I could to be there for them in their final moments, but I lived 4 hours away and just like you I had troubles at work. I did the best I could and I’m sure you did the same, and I know that meant the world to them. Four years later and I’m still sitting here listening to this choking on a waterfall of tears. Hold onto the memories my friend we’ll meet them again someday.

Not a day goes by I don't think about him. If your grandparents are still alive, give them a call or go have supper at their table. Say grace together over fresh mashed potatoes and hold their hugs a little longer than normal.

My Grandpa Cobb was born in 1890. He loved to tell me stories about what it was like growing up in Texas at the turn of the century. He lived through so much and was such a wise man. He passed away when he was 93 years old a couple of years before the Judds released this song and it always reminded me of him. I shed a few tears listening to this version.

My grandfather, a pioneering figure in our village's Christian community, dedicated his life to serving as a local pastor through countless trials and triumphs. In the wake of his passing, your rendition has taken on a profound new meaning for me. I was initially captivated by your voice, which made the song unforgettable. Now, I find solace in your version once again, as the lyrics resonate with me on a deeper level than I ever imagined possible. I deeply desire to translate it into our native language, preserving the emotional depth and authenticity that makes the original so impactful. Even the slightest guidance on how to approach this would mean the world to me. Thank you, Dave.

It's the loss of simplistic value of America. the world is so cruel and distant. My family is still alive and yet in a sense dead. Hello and thank you for this magnificent song which pays tribute to your deceased grandfather. I lost a baby 5 days before birth, another in a car accident when my wife was pregnant, then my father and recently my best friend. Every time we lose a loved one it is a pain that invades us and we do not always know how to treat it. In France there is an expression which says: you miss a being and everything is depopulated. Love is a completely free thing that we should not hesitate to give without counting. Money has taken over love and man has become selfish and blind. Rare are those who extend a hand to those who suffer. Thanx for your songs. God bless you and your family. God bless America. Eric from FRANCE.

To anyone listening to this and feels the feels and emotions of this song, we’ve got hearts. Big hearts. My papa, my grandpa, and my best friend was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. I spent my childhood with him, every weekend, holidays, and days off from school. We worked together and he gave me my work ethic that I carry today. I am so grateful and proud to be a part of him. And it breaks my heart to see him in the way that he is. I recently lost my other grandpa, papa Jim. And it was hard to be around him and see him deteriorate. Then because of COVID I had to say goodbye to him as he took his last breath via FaceTime. It was not easy, it tore me up. But I know he’s in a better place. He’s not in pain and not struggling. And that’s something I hold close to my heart. So for my papa that’s still here I will always be there to hear your stories. With the Alzheimer’s, it’s hard to have a conversation. But, when your telling stories about the good ol days he can come back to himself and talk for hours. And one thing I’ve learned about Alzheimer’s is that story time and music are a huge factor to bringing their mind at ease and giving that sense of connection. Love you papa!! And to anyone out there with loved ones experiencing Alzheimer’s or dementia please try music and talking about “back in the day” it’s over whelming how they can change and react... Even for a moment.

I met the man I call my Grandpa when I was about 10 years old. He married my Grandma and really took his role as a grandparent to heart. I remember him telling me and my brother stories of when he was my age and bagging his first deer, the first time he taught me a song to play on guitar, eating deer meat for breakfast with him and grandma, and spotting all the critters around the property, and many more memories. On my 11th birthday, he gave me my first guitar, and he is the reason why I became a musician and eventually a guitar builder. This year, he won't be able to see me turn 29, after passing away a few months ago. I miss you, Grandpa. I can only hope to live up to your example.

I used to love this song growing up. My grandpa always told me Army stories. The one i will never forget was one where he was overseas fighting in World war 2. He seen something out of the corner of his eye and grabbed one of his army brothers. next thing thing they knew a explosion happened. Hi Sargent seen what he did and told him he just saved his Army brothers life. I must have heard this story hundreds of times. I never really knew if it was true. Then he passed away from a heart attack and I was devastated. He and I were really close. The day of his funeral came and I was wreck. My then girlfriend at the time(she later became my wife) was trying to help me through it all. I was standing outside the funeral home when some older gentlemen asked me if the is the funeral for my grandpa. I said yes but I didn't know who he was so I asked him how he knew my grandpa. His exact words were son I it wasn't for your grandpa I would have been killed in the war. I will never forget his stories or that day i met the man who he saved. He flew all the way to Michigan from Flagstaff Arizona to say goodbye to him.

“Did daddies really never go away..,” hits different when your great grand father, grandfather and father arnt your blood. Because every man in my patriarch has commitment and abandonment issues. Literally every “father figure” in my life married into my family. None of my blood stuck around. Now that I have my own 3 kids (5yo 2yo 1 yo) I can’t imagine making them feel the way I felt growing up.

My Father left when I was one and I can only remember a handful of times that I saw him after that. My dad came into my life at ten and treated me just like his son, like his blood, and I am eternally grateful for that. I now have three beautiful little girls and could not imagine leaving them alone to deal with this world. Y’all are right we must break this terrible cycle. Thanks so much Dave for this amazing cover of a beautiful song. It really hits me

Thanks man. I'm a 55 year old Aussie guy. I'm lucky to have 15 grandkids that call me Grandpa. I'm also basically a single Dad who is really lucky to be raising one of these kids. We were having so much fun tonight and I stumbled across this song. Praise God for your Grandpa, looks like he has a great Grandkid as well. Steve

This is an amazing version of the Judds song. Absolutely breathtaking. I will be listening to it for days to come. I lost my Daddy back in 2023 ..I miss him dearly. There are days when i just dont want to move ahead. The world is a different place now without him. So thankful For this song and the love of Jesus for holding me on days when I feel like just giving up.

I'm so sorry for the loss of your Precious Father Michelle. I lost my Daddy too early this year. Even saying that is almost unbelievable. The pain is too much to bear sometimes. I _love_ this version of this song and when I hear it, even though I love it, I now burst into a river of tears. The whole world has changed for my Mum and I. I know Jesus will look after our loved Ones and surround our beloveds with perfect Love and perfect Light. From the little girl in me to the little girl in You, who adore their Fathers. Strength, love and hugs

Having a good daddy is something to be thankful for. I have my father in my life but he is no daddy. He's still as selfish and miserable as he ever was. I never understood why my mom left him when we were so young, it didn't take me long to realize why.

My dad left us when I was still in pampers. Grew up in the hands of an abusive step father. Certainly shaped my siblings & my life. No matter how hard we tried for normalcy, once your in the hands of an abuser & you don’t have that biological connection to run to for help, it follows you mentally all your life.

I do not leave messages frequently but I want to thank you for bringing back this marvelous classic. My dad went home to be with Jesus in September, and this and a couple of other songs remind me of him. The 'Virus' was not the reason. He had just turned 91 and decided he had hung around long enough. The love of his life went 8 yrs ago and I believe he missed her and wanted to walk and talk with her and Jesus. Again Thank You from someone old enough to be your mom. ;-)

As a child I would sing along to this song, fishing on the lake with my dad.... I still cannot get through the line "did Daddies really never go away?" without cracking. Your voice absolutely transcended the untouchable nature of this song. To be honest I skipped your video a week ago because my initial reaction is nobody can cover that song. You had a grown man in disbelief, in tears your voice is a gift from God I cannot comprehend.

To the 2.2 k who clicked dislike, there is something wrong with your ears and/or heart. This song hit me right in the feelz. I’m not saying I’m bawling. But yeah, this rendition made me cry like a baby, missing loved ones who’ve passed. Anyway, thank you for this beautiful version of the song. You do the Judds proud. You have a lovely voice and ability to play.

This song hits me so hard I can barely handle it. I wish I had the same stories as the other commenters on this video, family that were loving and close. It's like I wish I could relate to the lyrics, but I can't and that's what makes it so powerful. I have my own children now, two boys. I shower them with love every day. It probably sounds weird but I can't wait to grow old and watch them prosper, and maybe one day I get to tell my grandkids about growing up in the 90s.

Lost my grandfather back in 1985 when I was only 14. Lost my grandmother 10 years later. Never knew my grandparents on my fathers side. My mom passed about 8 years ago. I still miss all of them. It just seems like life gets more heartbreaking as you grow older and start losing those closes to you. Great cover of this song and it sure gets the tears flowing thinking back to the past.

My team had the opportunity to run sound for Mr. Fenley a few months ago at an event in Maryland. A true gentleman. It was an honor to work with him and amazing to see his one-of-a-kind vocal and acoustic skill-set in the moment. It's not everyday that a piece of music brings an entire audience to tears. That takes something special.

Wow, I'm gobsmacked, this is amazing. No disrespect to "The Judds", but this is better than the original, the earthy voice, amazing guitar and raw emotion in the way he sings. Sort of like a mixture of Chris Stapelton, Larry Fleet and Cody Johnson. Keep it up Dave, you are amazing.
