I think people also forget that some of these gadgets are helpful in other ways... like disabilities, injuries, and children. I loved some of these (and similar ones) while my kids were growing up and I couldn't yet give them a knife. And when I need to wrap my wrist, these can keep the wrap cleaner and use less motion.

Yeah, that's the problem with abled people testing these. They don't think of how it could make a simple task easier because they think their way is the easiest. @Stezika15 like the fry maker is pretty worth it. If you are going to make fries you probably want to make a big batch and I'd rather use the fry press than a knife. The rest of the tools seem kinda pointless. Problem using gadgets for herbs is that they generally only do one type of cut/mostly smashing. Also sharpening any kitchen gadget with weird shaped blades seems like a pain.

what people forget sometimes is that sometimes gadgets no matter how silly and gimmicky they seem can make things easier for people with grip or limited power in their arms or hands, depending on each individual, and day to day as some of their grip/power might be better some days than others. also some of these gadgets could be a good way of introducing children to cooking in a safer way.

I like to think these would be best in a specialised or dedicated kitchen to preparing food for others than a home kitchen. Home kitchens only have so much storage space, average sized kitchens will only have a few cupboards and drawers to store tools, where professional kitchens with need for more time save, can afford to be much bigger and will only need a handful of them for speciality dishes, will get way more use out of them.
@zweck4629
@zweck4629 6 ай бұрын
You have to factor in the storage space for all the gadgets, how long it takes to collect all the pieces from random drawers and assemble them and then how long it takes to wash everything and store it again. In my experience it is usually only worth taking out some gadget if you need to cut large amounts of something or want very uniform pieces.

I've worked in a couple professional kitchens and my favorite gadget was a Univex 20lb vegetable peeler. It was about the size of a 5 gallon bucket and it had a rotating bottom that had an aggressive grit to it. One would put in whole washed potatoes, run some water into the basin, and turn the machine on for a few minutes. Once the side gate was opened you'd have perfectly peeled potatoes come falling out. I don't think a knife is always faster just more versatile, which you proved.

To be fair, with a potato peeler, I'd imagine the automatic one is still easier to use. It's like trying to compare using an oven to cooking something by hand on a stove. Even in situations where cooking by hand is faster, you still have to be carefully attending and doing work by hand actively, whereas with an oven you can just set it and play video games until you hear the timer go off.

For this to be a fair comparison, most gadgets should probably include some setup and cleanup time, because it's quite significant compared to the ease of the knife. In the end, I think you'd only ever want to consider a gadget for some specific laborious task that you do a whole lot in your cooking. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.

I think for me the biggest time waste with the gadgets wouldn't be actually using them, it would be in taking them out, and in cleaning them. I have very limited space so they'd definitely go in awkward places, and most of these probably couldn't go in the dishwasher like a knife. Makes a lot of sense for something you have every day, though

To be fair to the knife people, you only needed to have one knife. So I guess they were more commenting on the idea that you dont need to buy several different gadgets when a knife will do. That being said I do have the potato peeler, and I do prefer using it to a manual peeler. Especially because I tend to cut myself with the manual peeler.

Watching him chop garlic (with a knife) makes me think part of it could be improved with a change in method (and knife choice at times). There’s a reason chefs don’t tend to keep 50 single-function kitchen gadgets on hand. But it also really depends what knives you have available! I grew up thinking chopping food was ridiculously tedious because my mom mostly had steak knives and only a couple were really sharp. Most were never the right tool for the job. Fast forward to adult me, with a set of knives I really like, and I actually enjoy prepping vegetables often times! Sure, quartering small, individual items (like grape tomatoes) is still mostly a chore, but dicing an onion or mincing garlic is much better with a proper knife. However, as others have said, if you lack the grip strength or coordination a gadget could be a better choice.

I think there are still a couple issues with the gadgets: 1. Knives can be resharpened if they go dull. You're not going to be able to resharpen some of these gadgets. 2. Knives take up less space and can be used for a multitude of jobs. If you have a gadget for everything, you're going to run out of space. I only have slapchop type tool for easy chopping of veggies. Biggest problem is that I still need to chop the veggies up into smaller pieces so I can use the dicer.

That potato peeler is awesome. The manual peeler may have been a bit faster, but the thing is you can just hit the button and do something else. Tiny bit longer on the peeling, but so much faster overall while you're getting 2 things done at once. And the peel left on the ends could just be cut off before you stick it on the spikes

That is a big thing that people don't quite get about automated gadgets in general; so many people have this issue with dishwashers, that they take a long time and hand-washing is faster. That's true in a pure dish-turnaround sense, but the actual time I spend doing each means the dishwasher wins, cause all the time that the machine takes is time I'm doing something that's not dishes.

The potato chipper is a good tool if you have to chip up a lot of potatoes but it is not a great design. The commercial ones I have used set up on the edge of the workspace and drop the chips into a tub below it. They are also secured to the table / counter so they don't shift around while in use. I have had to run 160 potatoes through one and it was a snap. At home I cut chips with a knife and it takes me a minute to cut up 3 potatoes into equal sized chips.

The one we have is like a box with blades on the top and no bottom so you can access the potatoes easily, with a piece that goes over the box to push the potato through the blades. Not the best if you're making a lot, but definitely works well for a small group. Easy to clean too
