I have my Grandma's recipe for Butterscotch Pie. It's kind of a butterscotch custard in a pre-baked pie shell with a meringue topping. My Grandma came from England.

50 seconds in and I'm already laughing! It'd never occurred to me how similar the qualities of butterscotch and classical music are. Thank you! Happy New Year mate! Now for the rest of it ...

I always appreciate your more gustatory and hobby-oriented comparison videos (Massanet fluff, hot sauces as musical interpretation, etc.).

I watched this working at the top of a ski lift. My father has been searching for good butterscotch and I'm sending this to him

During childhood (early-to-late 1960s) visits to the Maine coast, a certain candy store in Ogunquit always had these incredible butterscotch lollipops (i.e., on a stick)…They were more milky than translucent, flat on one side and bulbous on the other. In later years, whenever I revisited Ogunquit they were a reassuring, nostalgic reminder of SO MUCH of what culture (and the country at large) lost. Then in the wake of the 2008-09 Great Recession, they disappeared. But thanks to this video I see that See’s Candies still sells them…Vielen Danke!

"Few things are better than butter and sugar" - hear hear! Our movie nights involve making a caramel (with butter) with roasted cashews we pour over popcorn.

Oh wow, major nostalgia rush. I can't remember the last time I saw a package of Callard & Bowser butterscotch.

What a yummy episode! I'm an L.A. native and grew up with See's. Now I live elsewhere, but receive a big box every Christmas from my finance guy. A perfect way to ensure client retention. I loved the comparison between the world of fine candy and classical music. You're an original, Dave, and I enjoy your stories as much as a big box of Sees!

Delightful talk! Reminds me that I used to make hard toffee: butter, sugar, salt and a pinch of baking soda. Haven't in years...

Ah, Callard & Bowser's ... I particularly loved their licorice; nothing like it. I always had some around when writing papers in college. I'm in So Cal, so Sees is readily available fortunately.

I have mourned the loss of Callard & Bowser, and their incomparable butterscotch, as also indeed their licorice! Paradise Lost. Nostalgia is too painful sometimes....

Thanks for further info on the demise of Callard & Bowser, Dave. It was a favorite of mine. If you should ever find yourself in SW PA, look for Glen's Frozen Custard in their Butterscotch flavor. They have stores in exurban Pittsburgh, but I buy the pints in my local Market District supermarket. It is as good an ice cream as C&B was a candy.

Those were the days. As children we made our own butterscotch, chocolate fudge and coconut ice at home. If the choc fudge didn't set properly it became chocolate spread

Perhaps Werther's Original? Made with real butter and fresh cream, I believe they're still manufactured in Germany and not owned by some giant conglomerate. At least worth considering, I think, if you can't get your hands on any of those boutique brands. I remember eating them in my twenties and the woman next to me at work remarking that I liked "old man candy." Ah, but Classical was "old man music" as well.

Werther's is very good too.

"The sun poured in like butterscotch and stuck to all my senses." Thus did Joni Mitchell celebrate the delights of -- wonder to behold -- a Chelsea Morning! Clearly she shared your enthusiasm for both the confection and (by residential congruence) the brand. What a potent example of synesthesia among the visual, aural, and gustatory pleasures of life; and fortuitously, via this video, of genre crossover between classical and popular music (it would be marvelous if Joni saw this). Now that you have elucidated the relative quality of competing butterscotch products, can we look forward to your discussion of the perennial controversy over Hydrox versus Oreo? 😛

My brother had a relationship breakup when his ex helped herself to his Hydrox cookies without asking him first.

@DavesClassicalGuide That's a truly heinous betrayal of trust! Were those Sunshine Hydrox? No wonder their bond crumbled immediately after such a shocking twist. But probably neither of them had found the relationship to be emotionally filling at that point. Cue "Sunshine of Your Love" by Cream.

See's Candies has a store here on Coburg Road in Eugene, Oregon. Sometimes I wonder how a stand alone, brick-and-mortar candy store does in this era of shop-by-mail, but I assume Warren Buffet knows what he is doing. I enjoy your channel, Mr. Hurwitz.

Butterscotch syrup works well on pancakes, French toast, waffles, biscuits and ice cream. Nothing shabby about maple syrup, but butterscotch would be my first choice...

The lollipop ones are a little too much butterscotch at one time for me. But they do work really well for snacking while reading. The vanilla one is surprisingly very good as well!

I can't believe I've just watched 15 minutes of candy critique. It was entertaining. Meiji is just the Japanese version of Mars and Nestle. A stick on butterscotch! How gouch.

Supposedly Champion and Reeves uses the Callard and Bowser formula. So that makes Champion and Reeves Naxos, maybe? Re-releasing classics under their aegis? I'm going to order some, one more hit on my wallet thanks to your videos. Not quite as expensive as the Complete Crumb Edition, though...
@DavesClassicalGuide5 күн бұрын
No, it's not quite the same, but very similar.

I live on classical music but can't stand butterscotch. I do like Altoids. There's a nice See's store near me. Next to them was a high end audio store where I got my set up. The audio store is out of business. Sees is still there.

You need to work on the butterscotch thing.

@DavesClassicalGuide LOL. Not a big caramel fan, either. Sometimes I gravitate to tart over creamy. I just listened to Solti's Moses und Aron again ( which come to think of it, combines both; Aron creamy, Moses tart.)
