I'm a 67 year old grandmother, I've always been afraid of spiders. I started watching your channel about 6 months ago, you guys are amazing!!! I even rewatch a lot of your videos, I have learned so much, and am not as afraid as I was. They are very fascinating. I have thought about getting a spider, but my husband says he doesn't want anything around that can get lose and bite him. Just wanted to thank you guys, keep up the great work, you are very much appreciated. 😊

Reassure your husband that they can't escape if you have a good secure enclosure, and the likelihood of being bitten is very low, even if they did get loose, get a docile species like a grammostola pulchripes (chaco golden knee) ours is an old gentle lady and has never kicked hairs or threat posed, she's an absolute darling.🙂

I’m 66 & got in to spiders one year ago !! I now have 13 tarantulas. Made a cool looking zoo in part of my living room. It really looks good & it did cost. So they’re not going everywhere & not on shelves. With some work I might be able to fit a few more 🎉 No slings for me 🤣 mine very from 2-5 inches. I’m Loving the hobby !! First things ever morning are coffee & KZbin

I’m a 57yr old granny, I too was an Arachnophobic. After watching KZbin videos from our Main Man Dave, and his good Lady wife, I took the plunge and got myself a Brachypelma Hamorii (Mexican Red Knee, who I call Josie) I’ve had her for a year now! 🕷️💕 She’s amazing! I’m glad I got her 🥰xx

I don't have a feeding schedule for my Ts, I feed them whenever. I'll feed em, wait a week or 2 or 3, feed em, maybe a snack here and there. What I love about them is they don't require food regularly, and by feeding them more randomly I think its more wild like and natural. I have exceptions, like with molts and if they look thin. But other than that what I do works well for me. Love the videos Dave, your such a cool guy :) and camera lady is wonderful at her job

Your husbandry is just excellent. Not only the thoughtful and species appropriate feeding, but the way you sensitively move the containers, take the lids off, move the animals…and the results are clear in the attitude of the spiders. Happy little beasties! That threat pose was a very rare occurrence for you, and he soon stopped and sheepishly wandered off 😄 All would be keepers should watch all your videos carefully. As well as quite a few established ones that could do with taking a leaf or two out of your book! Love the pokie ❤

I came in to the hobby because of the beastie room. I watched all his videos at first (I used to be terrified). Then messaged him as to the best one for a beginner that had a fear. He suggested the curly haired. I've had it almost a year and it's doing excellent. No Google searches or other channels just The Beastie room. I've had absolutely no issues. I would and have highly recommended him to any and everyone!!!

When I used to keep several marine fish aquariums I would tell people new to the hobby, "A hungry fish is a happy fish." So with a lot of animals (not all) I believe it is healthy for the animal to be "hungry", but not starving.
@Bradimus1981
@Bradimus1981 Жыл бұрын
I think most people do not understand that so many animals do not have a mechanism or instinct to stop feeding because they are "full". As you said though Dave it also depends on the stage of life the animal is in and there are other factors as well. So I agree with you Dave.

I keep plants and my routine for watering is whenever it’s dry however with my Ts I will feed every 1-2 weeks. checking in on them throughout the week to see if they eat and do maintenance if needed! I’m new to the hobby but you Dave and Tom (Toms spiders) give fantastic advice! If my T looks active and is wondering, I’ll entertain it with a prey item sometimes they take it sometimes they don’t. My caribena versicolor(sub-adult finally has adult coloration!!!) molted last month and has yet to open its web! So I spray (a spritz) it’s web with a lil water to make sure it drinks at least :)… just got 2 Pamphobetus (mascara and south Ecuador II) so I expect to be feeding my Ts a little more often 😆

Can't say it enough, excellent video. These ones that you make with all the extra information are my favorite. I've learned so much from you guys. I went from being terrified of spiders to I now have one of my own. Little curly haired I've had almost a year (not so little anymore). I got him/her (sexing is not really important to me as I don't think I'm going to do any breeding) as a tiny sling. I've not had any issue at all not a one buy simply watching your videos. I would be willing to bet you guys are the reason for so many new to the hobby. Your videos are very easy to understand and follow. And an excellent resource for questions. You also respond to to questions and just simple comments which give a sense that you really care about your subscribers. I know you can't get to every one as you have many but the fact that you do says alot. Thank you again for all you do. Sending lots of respect from Cincinnati Ohio USA

For what it's worth, here's my system. On my front door I have a dry erase calendar. I cut some post card paper into little squares and hot glued them to magnets. On them I've written each section of my collection, e.g. "Brown Shelf", "Living Room", "Slings". Then I move each magnet to current day when I go thru a section and check on everyone. That way I can keep track and make sure I don't forget and leave anyone behind. 🤗 it really helped me improve my keeping. Especially with my ADHD 😏

I also won't usually feed unless they 'look' hungry. I judge them one by one, so nobody gets too fat or too skinny, depending on species.

I am a bit bummed 🙁 about the calendars but will hopefully be in a better financial situation 💷💸next year so I can get one early. I have been wondering about your Seledonias. Do you still have them? I'm sure when I first started I was trying to feed too often. Now, I've gotten to where I only feed when I see a spider moving around more or when the abdomen looks smaller. The only Tarantulas I feed fairly often are my very tiny slings. I provide them with a prekilled item every 2 or 3 days and remove the item after 24 hours.

My sub adult chalcodes has not eaten in almost a year and a half. She is STILL fat as hell and STILL hasn't molted. She stays barricaded in her burrow most of the time. But she is in wonderful condition. My other aphonopelma (adult seemanni) also hasn't eaten in a VERY long time and her abdomen is also huge. So yes, the aphonopelmas can stay healthy for a very long time without eating. GREAT video Dave, as always. I LOVE learning more from you every time.

Another master class on awesome husbandry and feeding advice, thanks for this! It's funny...about a year and a half ago I asked you in the comments of a video "How do you maintain a feeding schedule for such a collection?" I was so new to the hobby and had so much to learn. I was VERY much of the mindset that I needed to feed weekly on a schedule. Now I own 10 T's and maintain them based on the behavior I see. It makes the process of monitoring and feeding so much simpler! Thanks as always, your videos are always so helpful.

Dave, I watch some of the tarantula videos on other KZbin channels and they leave me so annoyed. One of the guys in particular is constantly waving his hands around his tarantulas frantically, and, surprise surprise, his spiders are constantly giving threat postures. All that stress can't possibly be good for them, although he seems to be thrilled to no end by it. You are always so gentle with your animals and it comes through in their calm demeanor. I have to say, most of my spiders are always out even the ones notoriously reclusive. My electric blue, hmac, chilobrachys kaeng krachan. I sporadically feed them. I dont keep tabs. I also dont feed them huge meals unless they are huge spiders. They all have plump abdomen. Ive learned over feeding, once theyve reached their max abdomen size they will just hide. My seemani is the only one that will stay hidden. Anyway another great video.

My old lady grammostola pulchripes can go for 6 months between feeds, she never loses condition and always looks plump. We got her over 3 years ago as an adult female and she hasn't moulted once in our care, so I can only imagine she's very old bless her. She's quite active in the summer months and will eat well, then suddenly goes on hunger strike for months at a time. My psalmopeus victori and irmina on the other hand would eat every day if I let them lol.

They've always given me the Heebie jeebies but after watching your videos and how your methods instill calmness in your spiders I decided to branch out into this hobby ... I've kept a variety of Snakes over the last 30 years so it's not something I've entered lightly ... Thanks for sharing your knowledge...

I absolutely loved this video, the amount of spiders and information you pass on is incredible! Children getting older can keep them, they learn so much from you, you are like a font of knowledge! Next year I am going to the Bristol show I am going to meet you! I am a day late as I had my flu jab pneumonia jab then a B12 jab and the COVID has knocked me on my bottom! Much love to you both especially the camera lady she always films, and is amazing at it! What camera do you use? The videos always look professional ! ❤

Really appreciate this video! Glad to see an educational feeding video designed for keepers brand new or relatively new to tarantula care. The visual examples of size of carapace vs abdomen for feeding schedule is very helpful. Another benefit to waiting for your T to come out looking for food is that too frequent feeding can cause a tarantula to go into premolt early, close off its burrow, and hide until it molts. Dave, If you have time, would you consider doing a similar video for enclosure size, designed for newer keepers, with mostly unsexed juveniles, not intended to be grown out for breeding purposes. Your videos about enclosure size for adult breeding tarantulas make sense, but for general pet keepers, what is too small and is too big really a problem for a growing tarantula? Are more frequent enclosure upgrades better than just a few jumps from sling to juvenile to adult size enclosures?

I've always liked watching your videos Dave, as you are very experienced and knowledgeable and explain things really well and make it very educational. Now obviously I know nothing about having a channel and don't know if you receive any monetary benefit from the adverts, but you've had loads in your last few videos and right in the middle of you talking and making a point about something. I'm not going to lie, they're annoying. But great video none the less, sorry for the essay. 😂

My adult A chalchodes hasn’t taken food in over 100 days at this point and it looks similar to yours …. I have been pushing my feedings out longer… seems my dubia colony is well fed and I think that has a lot to do with how often you feed.. I care for my feeds as good as my T’s … I raise them up to good feeding source.. I think it’s how well fed are the feeders you use … one well fed roach will offer a lot more then 2-3 thin roaches. Quality over quantity is my theory
