I did some research on the canal finding it very interesting. I couldn't find info on the many houseboats along your walk. Do their residents pay docking fees? Do they have access to electricity, water, toilets, showers, etc.? I didn't see any hookups. Also it looks like many of the houseboats haven't moved for quite some time. As the canal has a system of locks, do any of the locks remain operational, and if so who staffs them - volunteers? Dave, I asked quite a bit and I promise to buy you some "coffee". Thanks!
@DavesWalks2 жыл бұрын
Whilst my knowledge is limited regarding canal boats, houseboats to have to pay what i guess would be called boat tax and insurance, there are docking fees, but i believe these are only payable when you are docking in places with amenities I am not sure.. as for the boats they have generators that will keep them powered, they do have water for toilets and showers and I guess gas, but I think the owner will have to frequently visit places for top ups. Some boats I think do set up a place to have as a permanent pace to dock, and I am sure some house boats are always on the move. I would say near all locks remain operational. They can all be operated manually by the houseboat occupants. There upkeep being a mixture of volunteers, but also the Canal and River Trust that are quick to respond to any problems relating to locks/canals. I would suggest a good source of info is KZbin - search for: canal boats uk. For a wealth of information regarding day to day life living on a canal boat. Hope this was of some help 🙂👍

Good video & plugs a gap on YT for a decent video of the quality of the PFC towpath, so we cyclists can decide whether to tackle it or not. I like the fact that you let the scenery speak for itself instead of yakking throughout as a running commentary. Good work 👍

Dave, I enjoy your walks. You have a beautiful England ( I live in the US) and I want to visit and follow in your footsteps.But I am fascinated by the concept of enjoying a canal narrow boat voyage or three. But when you are wandering, I see lots of docked boats and very few on the water. Why? Do people buy them and take them out for a week or two every year? I guess very few people live on them for long and most people who have them are wealthy and take them out seasonally. Just trying to understand the concept. I suspect that a lot of people who blog about narrow boat living do this as an alternate lifestyle, but I also suspect most boat owners are weekend warriors. Kind of makes sense. Any impression from you on this would be appreciated. Just trying to understand. Thanks for your walks and any thoughts you can provide. In other words, maybe I should plan on a visit to take a few walks and forget about the boating idea, unless, after a visit or two narrow boating makes sense to me.
@DavesWalks8 ай бұрын
I reckon about 80% are full time lived in, the rest are holiday boats. Whilst some people do probably enjoy travelling often, I know some are just happy to stay put in one place for most of the year and maybe travel only as a holiday break.
