The problems were evident during the 1989/90 season and they were at the back not up front. Hansen was 35 by then and absent quite a lot , Hysen had difficulty coping with pacey opponents and aerial bombardments and Gillespie was, as ever, chronically injury prone and losing pace. Opposing teams cottoned on that Liverpool were vulnerable to long balls over the top or set piece plays fired into the six yard area. The FA Cup semi-final defeat to Crystal Palace was a stark illustration of all that. As I recall it was difficult to recruit really world class centre backs at that time. Most seemed to be playing with the top Italian clubs.

I'd forgotten that Uri Geller used to play for Liverpool. Oh sorry, it was Jimmy Carter! Lol.

Speedie should have been given the hat trick here as Molby's goal was actually Speedie's goal.
@DaveWallerLFC4 жыл бұрын
I think there was a different attitude towards deflections then. It would probably be given to Speedie now, but at that time the person who shot usually got the goal. An example is Ronny Rosenthal's goal at home to Leeds that season. His shot hits the posts, bounces out and goes in off Lukic. It would definitely be an own goal now, but given to Rosenthal then. Speedie said he was trying to get out of the way of Molby's shot, so didn't want the credit. 2 goals on your home debut isn't too bad anyway!

I am tearing my hair out as to why Beardsley keeps being a substitute, despite having bagged a load of goals that season. Why Dalgleish, why? To be replaced by Speedie?
@DaveWallerLFC2 жыл бұрын
a) It's 30 years ago, so maybe tearing your hair out at this stage is an over-reaction b) Speedie scored 2 goals in this game c) Dalglish was probably suffering from PTSD after Hillsborough and resigned less than 2 weeks after this game

@@DaveWallerLFC My hair is still in tact but my curiosity isn't. As I have mentioned, something wasn't right here. It ultimately cost Liverpool the season IMO. And then as we know, it was all downhill from there

Think Kenny at that point had started to get bogged down with tactics and formations - choosing certain players for certain games (still quite rare in those days). A sign that the pressures of keeping Liverpool at the top were taking it's toll. Although injuries were a factor from January onward, such things had not bothered the manager in previous campaigns, with Liverpool letting the opposition worry them, not the other way round. Can't quite remember whether Beardsley was struggling with form or niggling injuries... but agree - baffling why he was excluded from so many games after his magnificent start to the 1990-91 season.
@DaveWallerLFC7 жыл бұрын
I don't agree. Kenny played Jan Molby as a sweeper in difficult away games a lot in his first season, so changing tactics was nothing new. Injuries derailed 1986/87 season as well. Peter Beardsley had some injuries that season but he was being dropped for every away game at the start of the season despite being in great form in the home games, so it wasn't to do with form or fitness.

Dave waller@ It was a personal matter between him and Dalglish. The former froze him out.
@DaveWallerLFC7 жыл бұрын
Did you mean the latter, or are you saying Beardsley froze Dalglish out? I know there were rumours of problems between them, but I remember an interview with Beardsley in 91 where he said there were no personal problems and his only beef was not being in the team.

Dave waller@ Sorry I meant Dalglish froze Beardsley out. He had the beef with Beardsley, wouldn't even speak to him.

Yeah, I remember as a kid in early nineties they used to show live games on a Saturday. They then stopped it, brought back for some time in the mid to late 2000s, then stopped it again.
