This is the perfect video for my orchard situation. There aren't nearly enough videos out there that reference size management on 2nd and 3rd year trees compared to the information that's available on first year and established fruit trees.

I really look forward to these videos Tom. They help me to understand your methods and reasoning. A better camera with less shaking and more real close-ups would help clarify what you are doing even more. Your explanations are clear but reinforcing the positioning of your cuts with close-ups would be great for those of us are on our own. Please keep them coming and thanks from Maine...a challenging zone for these trees!

My Granny smith tree was the same way, it didn't want to go dormant. Thanks for the tip of taking the leaves off.

I planted 5 variety of pluot this summer. Flavor king is one of them. All the others grew considerably, however Flavor king is the runt of the litter. He's about knee high, however I've pulled off about 50 rouge blooms from it since about June and still now in September is still producing flowers. I'm looking forward to next summer since this little guy appears to be a power house compared to the others.

Not to late, prune as soon as you can. Follow up with your last dormant spray. Make sure to mulch, feed with a low nitrogen fertilizer balanced for fruit and flower production and irrigate properly throughout the growing season. All important for proper fruit production.

Technique is up to the individual. We recommend as the basic concepts of BYOC are size control trees for ease of management, grow successive ripening varieties for fruit all season long and grow varieties with a good reputation in your area, varieties you like to eat and will use. It's up to you to choose a style and size that is manageable for you. You may also want to look at what other growers in your area are successful with and implement styles that fit your particular need and management.

Always enjoy watching your videos, thank you. I have one of your Pakistan Mulberrys; do you feel that a tree like this can be kept size controlled?

In January 2023, I planted two bare root pluerry trees and planted them slightly under 18” apart. Do you think they will be okay? As of now, they are growing well; they are about 6’ tall. I did not know about pruning them. Can I prune them when they go dormant? If yes, do I cut to knee high and thin out the center? Is there a percentage of pruning I can or cannot do? Any suggestions you offer is greatly appreciated.

Great video. I have some overly aggressive growing peach and nectarine trees similar to a few you did in this video but I never pruned more than once in the early spring. Can you explain abit why when and how you perform two prunings a year?

I planted a few bareroot trees a year ago that I thought I wanted to be pruned central leader. They are apple and pear. Is it too late to cut them to knee height for an open center this winter?

Great work Trying to sponge in the Info. I have a variety of fruit trees 1-2 years old that have been planted by the previous owner. Do you think it safe for me to dig them up and relocate them into a better arrangement? Perhaps via pots while area is prepared?

At 2:32, is that 'interruptive growth' or 'irruptive growth'?

He often said "dont have to do much", then keep cuting - for most clips. 😄

Would the same information be applicable in more northern climates like central Ontario, Canada?

If I lived there, I’d probably do nearly all my pruning in the summer.

Are the techniques you use the same techniques I should use in USDA zone 4 (Ottawa, Ontario)? I only have apple trees, but should I still prune the same way you do or do you do something different for colder climates? Thanks in advance for your help!

after making that knee high initial cut how much taller will the base get or does it usually stay at that height ? im doing that knee high cut on all my trees because i want to limit the size and keep them under 6 foot

The fruiting canopy will begin from where you make the first cut. The trunk will grow a little, but most of the growth will go into the two or three shoots you select from the knee-high cut.

Please change your camera or adjust its setting before filming. Even on 360p quality, the details of the work Dave is doing is not clear on the screen. It looks pretty much like 144p quality video. Thanks for your instructive videos.
