David Bentley Hart on Artificial Intelligence

David Bentley Hart argues here not only that computers cannot generate thinking or conciousness but also that they cannot even do what we call computing because anything we can claim to resemble "intelligence" in them is in the end reducible to our own minds. It's actually us, as intrinsically intentional beings, that do the computing by attribuing meaning to the processes those machines undergo.

I have my reservations about his politics and his more recent theological positions. But I cant deny that he is, in my mind at least, the best destroyer of materialists out there. Nobody comes close to him.

This sounds like a monologue from Ghost in the Shell: SAC 10/10. It reminds me of Pablo Picasso who said "Computers are useless, they can only give you answers." I think that computers are very useful, but it's the questions that exist in the programmer, and the ways those questions are manipulated, documented, and reified that make computers interesting.
