David Blue Praises His SGU Castmates (Dial the Gate)

STARGATE UNIVERSE added a brand new element to the long-running science fiction franchise, with a new group of characters stranded on the Ancient vessel Destiny millions of lightyears from home. It was also a uniquely formative experience for the show's young actors, who learned from one another every single day on set.
In this conversation with "Dial the Gate," Eli Wallace actor DAVID BLUE reflects on his castmates and the two years they spent together. David talks about which characters on the show really surprised him, how close the cast got, and revisiting SGU today with a rewatch with fans on his Twitch stream.

People said they didn’t like the darkness of the show because it didn’t fit the universe, personally I liked it. Not everything is light, you need the darkness to appreciate the the light.

SGU had a tough time, I say this from my point of view, I wasn’t the fairest with it at the time I was still upset about SGA but the show was finding its footing and it was becoming really interesting by the end, it’s a total shame we never got the change to see it grow🙁

Still can't say I enjoyed most of season 1 but season 2 got a lot better and I don't think it was because of the slow build on in season 1. Really would to love to learn what happened to Eli after the show rapped. You were the perfect counter part to Rush and it made you two my favorite on the show.

David, eli was the only character I enjoyed on this show. Well done. The show overall was dark and very off theme relative to most of the Stargate Universe, but you were a spot of light in a sea of Battlestar Galactica depression.

I still choose to believe in my head cannon that Eli at the end of the last episode, finally had a moment to think and realized what the colored light flowing toward the ship was, it was light. And that if he dropped the collectors they would collect just enough to keep the life support running. Or that Eli ascended or time traveled and somehow made it into the SG1 pilot

I prefer to go with him going insane and shutting down cryo chambers one by one to get just a little more energy. I know it's bleak, but let's be real he was left alone on a ship drifting in space, insanity is practically a given.

I prefer the comic version where he finds more cryo tubes with a couple of Ancient Engineers stuck on the ship who help repair the ship and no one needs cryo tubes to survive

I think and from what I have read is that the show didn’t do well because there was no support. The other shows did not build up to this show. It was kinda just throw into us. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the show. I think it would be cool af if we got to see destiny in the Milky Way or Pegasus galaxies. And have a story on them rebuilding it and discovering more about it. I would love to see that.

Lookin good man. If you ever read this, Hope to see you on any new movies or shows. Would you be down to be in a new movie or show? (always been a favorite character). It's unfair they canceled SGU before we had a chance to see season 2. I think the writers screwed up season 1, then canceled it based on season 1... when season 2 was so much better. I think the air, water, food thing was a bad idea.

In the beginning the show was a bit too "CW", holding on sorrowful closeups with loud music trying to tell you what you should be feeling instead of letting the scene do that job. That always gives a show too much of a teen drama vibe. It was always so distracting from the actors performances. off topic: I don't think I'll ever understand why someone would use that awful ai background removal when you have an actual proper greenscreen.

Yep, no need to waste your time building a space story if your only goal is to make a drama series. They should have more focus on the space adventure. At least, on Stargate SG-1, by going into the stargate, they tried to relink with what the humanity became in the stars and what are the secret about the ancient. Even if the humans of the stargate system is way too much like the earth past civilisation.

I watch Stargate Universe for the adventure into the unknown when they started all that dumb drama with the stones and people jumping into each others body it became a soap Opera Lost in Space, the writers needed to focus more on all the technology Destiny had to offer and stick to the adventure of Destiny completing it's programmed Journey then maybe meeting up with the city of Atlantis

Lots of revisionist history going on in the comments here. The show didn't get cancelled because it was "the best StarGate". Also, I specifically remember everyone bashing HARD on Blue/Eli as being a terrible choice for an actor/character. I personally still agree with that opinion...and not because he was "fat".... because he wasn't a good actor and the characters entire storyline was completely stupid. I'll admit it got better in season 2 but it got cancelled because of season 1 which was just straight shaky cam garbage and it was too little too late. For those of us who were "actually" there....we remember...Pepperidge Farm remembers. Most people (aka "fans" of Stargate) didn't like it, people stopped watching fairly early on and it got cancelled. Someone stated "it was ahead of its time" and I agree with that. I just recently went through and rewatched the entire thing and it definitely holds up better now than when it was actually airing....but man that first season is still just terrible for so many different reasons.

My favorite Beta Male from SGU... or Omega... No! It is surely the Beta because he was the emotional tampon, but... I love him like that. And I LOVE the series. Even if it had only a fan continuation.

Stargate universe had a cool beginning but I feel like they could have done so much more with it. It could have been better. I was a little disappointed because it got boring after a while. They could have spiced it up with futuristic space alien civilizations and cool technologies. I also did not like the design for destiny spaceship. So many missed opportunities.

SGU is such a waste. Too much drama. We watch Stargate for universe exploration and journey. Not to see people bickering 24/24. There was so much potential to do with all the background with seed ship & destiny mission. Wasted in bad directoring. I think it's time to give the production of Stargate to another writer.

(Always about drone attack again & again, like if they had no idea to improve the story). The stuff about 2000 years of civilisation coming from the destiny was really nice. And most of great ideas were drop. David Blue character is maybe the worse written character i've seen in all Stargate history.
