I wanted to play this at my sister's wedding. She's a Labyrinth fan - and I had the idea that on that day we'd have masquerade masks hidden about the place. On cue, everyone would don their masks, leaving everybody but her and her beloved anonymous, wherein they could dance; and even as the world falls down she would have someone to be there for her - nobody else would matter but those two on that special, special day. I don't think, now, that I'll live to see the day, but I hope to take the thought of it with me.

When I was a kid I used to watch Labyrinth on a VHS every day (still watch it nowadays, from time to time), then, when I grew up, I discovered his music and his art. I was 8 when this movie came out and I immediately fell in love with him...I know as a kid that is crazy and maybe disturbing but I mean..it's Bowie 🤷 And Labyrinth was and always has been my favorite movie of all time. I always wanted to see him perform but never had the money for it and now that he's gone I regret not seeing him perform or trying to meet him. Since he's been gone I have learned a lot more about him, his music, his art and his family and his spirituality. I know we'll see him again some day but it still breaks my heart that he's not here anymore.

And if you look really closely at 3:16, you can see Sarah walking down the path away from the house. (This landscape painting is shown earlier at 2:35, with Bowie/Jareth's face forming the house). It must be Jareth and Hoggle's location. So I think Sarah really is there when the door flies open, but she must have run away when the door opened and headed back down the path...

Lovely to see Bowie’s dedication to the labyrinth narrative and his goblin king character, as he could have just done a standard music video that wasn’t even about the film. It's in reference to the movie "Labyrinth". Jareth ( David Bowie, AKA the Goblin King in the film) is pretty much expecting to see Sarah again after the events in the film. Sarah (the girl, she's played by Jennifer Conelly in the film. I don't know who plays her in the music video) is older and presumably working an office job. Jareth has powers in the film so I assume he's trying to subtly use his photos to lure Sarah back to him. It's not clear if she remembers everything that happened to her when she was 15 but she seemingly has an urge to find Jareth (it's implied that he was in love with Sarah). Sarah, however, never goes back to Jarethl and thus, both Hoggle (the dwarf) and Jareth are disappointed that no one is there.

This song is deep...it has a deeper meaning outside the movie but also in mirror of Jareth's love for Sarah. I could write a paper on this song on how one's individual love centers itself for a specific true love. The sacrifice to obtain the gift that you love, but in the end letting it go, if she chooses another path. That's real love! damn!

The music video features a mix of clips from the film, specially shot footage that shows David Bowie (who seems to be playing a version of his character from the film, Jareth) performing the song and clips a young woman (French actress Charlotte Valandrey) - who appears to be an older version of Sarah - in an office. The music video begins by showing an older Sarah relaxing in an office as a photocopier prints multiple images of Jareth's face. Meanwhile, Jareth is seen performing the track in an elegant room with Hoggle as his sole companion. A portrait of Sarah hangs on the wall. At one point the portrait crashes to the ground, prompting Jareth and Hoggle to look to the door as they falsely believe there is someone on the other side. The doorway is empty, and Jareth is seen staring ahead grimly upon realizing no one was there. Both Sarah and Jareth appear to want to go to the other, although neither of them are willing to take the first step. All credits go to labyrinth wiki, I don’t own this explanation.

This song- gosh it’s just perfection, I can’t explain how it makes me feel…when I first saw Labyrinth I loved the movie and David Bowie in it, when the ballroom scene came, I had my jaw dropped in admiration, this song makes my stomach drop, I feel butterflies every time I listen to it, this has never ever happened to me before with any song, I just adore it, no matter in what form or instrument. Since I listened to it, I stated the following: “When I get married, this will be my first dance song, and that’s decided”…I really want my future wedding to be Labyrinth themed, I hope I can get a partner that loves it as much as I do, and if not, I’ll stick with just the song. 🫶🏻

I remember slow dancing in your room. No music was playing, it was just you and I. But this song was playing in the back of my mind. I loved you with everything in me. I hope you are finally at peace. Rest well, M.R.C. My amazing fiancé. 09/25/89 - 01/20/22.

@jaerivus thank you, they always say "It's better to have loved and lost..." And I've come to terms with that. The pain is still there, but the love is too. And that's the most beautiful thing.

What a song. I went to the cinema as a kid and saw the movie originally back in 1986. Just magic and a great childhood memory. Bowie was a true genius.

Here's a little theory I thought of: The music video for Underground was kind of how Jareth got into the Labyrinth, he started out as friends with Hoggle but then they had a falling out. The movie happened and at the end, Jareth would watch over Sarah in his owl form. And then we get to this video and it's just Hoggle and Jareth waiting for Sarah and Sarah misses everything from the Labyrinth and wants to go back but for some reason she doesn't. Jareth and Hoggle are just anticipating her arrival. This probably isnt what it entails at all but its a fun little theory I came up with.

I'm 44 now, and I was a child when this was released and loved it. Then when I was in my early 20s, I shared these films with my children, one was a boy and my younger was my Lil daddy's girl, and we'd put this movie on just to dance to this song together. Usually danced to all of these songs, but this ws our song, and I miss those Lil eyes looking up at me, with her feet on mine, dancing with her papa. Thank you David for giving is this amazing soundtrack.
