"Big Brother" is a song written by David Bowie in 1973 and intended for his never-produced musical based on George Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four. In 1974 it was released on the album Diamond Dogs. It segued into the final track on the record, "Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family".
Lyrically, the song reflects the ending of Nineteen Eighty-Four, where Winston Smith's brainwashing is complete, and he loves Big Brother. This was described by Bowie biographer David Buckley as "a frightening paean to the Super God",while Nicholas Pegg considered that Bowie was showing how "the glamour of dictatorships is balanced with the banality".
The opening trumpet line, played on a Chamberlin, has been compared to Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain.The melody in the chorus was echoed in Bowie's own "Shining Star (Makin' My Love)" from Never Let Me Down (1987).
"Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family" is a song written by David Bowie in 1974 ending his Diamond Dogs album.
The song ends with the endlessly repeating sound of "bruh-bruh-bruh...", the first syllable of the word 'Brother' from "(Big) Brother" (the title and refrain of the preceding track) as though the record had broken. Bowie's initial intention had been for the machine to repeat the whole of the word 'Brother', but accidentally discovered that just the first syllable sounded much better.
The Goth-band Skeletal Family took their name from this song.
This song is David Bowie's interpretation of George Orwell's "two minute hate" from his novel "Nineteen Eighty-Four". Its mesmerizing chanting represents the mind-numbing influence that the two minutes has over the brainwashed citizens of Oceania, 1984's totalitarian government.

Without doubt one of his best musical efforts. And also from that particular time in great 70's Rock. Never will we see such "organic" musical talent again. Every song here a winner.

When I was young, the Dystopian imagery that Bowie implanted in me with the music from this album was so solid. I had read Orwell's '1984' in 1969 and was appalled at his imagery. Then I listened to Bowie's artistic interpretation in 'Diamond Dogs'. Now, we are close to living it, maybe a little later than we expected.

The Chant has always been my favorite Bowie song!!! So obscure most people I know have never heard of it!!! Musically it is so unique and enigmatic!!! Nothing like it anywhere as far as I know!!! It is songs like this that set him apart from all other artists!!! A singular vision that transcends human thought emotion and expression!!! Difficult to choose a favorite among David's vast catalog but Chant is certainly in my top 10 or maybe 5........

+sugarkaneandchloe It's been a long time since I read "1984" but I know Bowie wanted to create a musical based on that book. Maybe it was an album, but I think it was a musical. Anyway, Diamond Dogs has a lot of references to 1984 (like the song of the same name, obviously). So what Sal Paradise said is plausible. Listen to the last 6 seconds and you can clearly hear he's saying "run, run, run, run.......
@BoudicaJ
@BoudicaJ 8 жыл бұрын
+TheTestingGrounds Well...whilst it's true that Bowie wanted to do a musical based on 1984 , Sonia (Orwell's widow) wouldn't allow him to. However Bowie used some of the left over compositions to make Diamond Dogs. It hasn't been long since *I* read 1984... I am intimately acquainted with both Orwell AND Bowie and no, Sal Paradises' comment is not plausible. Lol. Run run run..who is running, and from whom?

Also with reference to 1984 at the end of the song in the fade out if you listen carefully you can hear Bowie is saying, “Brien, Brien, Brien, Brien, Brien, Run, Run, Run, Run……” in reference to Winston’s nemesis.

As a kid in 1974, this track landed on my ears like some kind of strange artifact transported back via time machine from a dystopian future. So angular, other-worldly, and unsettling (in the best way imaginable). The combination of the Mellotron parts and those low honking saxes is killer. I especially love the (Mellotron) trumpet break at about 1:47 - just beautiful. Rest in eternal peace, David Bowie. You are magnificent.

Diamond Dogs tracks have some of the most rockin' guitar and rhythm sections tucked onto their ends. Chant of the Never Ending Circle freekin' kicks it every time, and that hyper lush rhythm & slide guitar during the last minute of the Sweet Thing reprise is A W E S O M E. So rare a combination of sheer lyrical talent and juicy rocker-trash instinct. Loved this album since first listen, wore out the grooves. Rock on, you literate crazy diamonds.

Just read a great book about this album: "Diamond Dogs" by Glenn Hendler, part of the 33 1/3 book series. He cites Orwell's "1984," William Burroughs' "The Wild Boys," and Tod Browning's 1932 movie "Freaks" as the major influences for the work. Really fascinating and thought provoking, just like the album.

My schizophrenic older sister, whom I idolized, killed herself. I hear Bowie's brother all over Diamond Dogs. His best music as far as I'm concerned... The Candidate, We Are the Dead. I get it, for better or worse. In loving memory we live.

@WoodRatGirl Actually the tape stuck during recording and they left it that way to make a lock groove!!! The track, and the LP, end in a pseudo-lock groove, the first syllable of Bowie singing “brother” repeated in a stabbing loop of sound. The idea of a repeating lock groove on a record was an avant-garde experiment

when big brother segues into chant of the ever circling skeletal family, if you don't get the old chills up the spine, then i don't know what will.

This is my favorite Bowie album, without a doubt. Remember when I found this on vinyl for like 10 bucks. I've never been so psyched.

I wish someone would sing "Look back in anger" on x factor, especially that part where Bowie screams "feeeeel it in my voice!" till you come. That would be impressive.
