Great timing, I ordered the Conversation Piece box set, it arrived yesterday. Hope to get into it tonight. I got into Bowie back when the first album boxset. Five Years was released. Being born in '85 I wasn't too familiar with his work. Fell in love with the music instantly. Glad you rekindled your interest in him these past few years, was fun watching you build your collection from scratch.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts album by album, Larry. Big David Bowie fan, my favorite albums (at the moment - still some gaps to fill in CD collection) are Hunky Dory and Station to Station. Wow! On Station To Station, “TVC15” is absolutely my favorite. It’s so intense! “Stay” is beautiful, too. And “Golden Years” is fantastic. It might be my favorite album, but they’re all so good. Pinups is probably the bottom of the list, but like you, I need to listen to it more. 😏

I have a lot of the 1990's Rykodisc label editions of David Bowie's 1970's albums and "Scary Monsters". They have a lot of good bonus tracks. Some of which are hard to find elsewhere. Although, these are not always the best sounding editions. I kept most of them just for the bonus tracks. I like the sound better on later CD editions of some of the albums. For instance, I prefer the 2012 CD edition of "Ziggy Stardust".

The thing with Bowie is that you've got to give it/him/the albums time, you gotta do a little research. And that would be pretty much every album. I probably haven't given "Diamond Dogs" enough time as I thought it was one of his worst. But I could be very wrong. It took me a long time to get into him and I finally did a year or two before he passed. His 90's work is pretty great. Black Star is incredible especially given the circumstances in which he made it. I don't know that I'm a huge fan, but at one point or another, each album and various songs on each album will eventually get you.

Larry! What a catalogue! There is another live release “A Reality Tour” which is good, has a great stripped down version of “Loving the Alien.” Two favorite cuts of mine I’d recommend you check out (that you didn’t remember well:) “After All” from the Man Who Sold the World- of course on vinyl it ended side one. I always that Bowie was a master of sequencing of (songs on) albums the open and closers of each side. The other song I’d mention is again a first side ender “Right” from Young Americans - a great cocaine song, one of the best (and I mean that nostalgically:)

Well done, sir. I'm a long-time Bowie fan from the beginning of the '70s. "Station to Station" and "Diamond Dogs" are my favorites by him. His "Space Oddity" album is fine, I always liked 'Janine' the best. "Low" took some adjustment. I didn't care for his dance/pop trilogy much but "Tonight" is the best of the lot. Give a listen to the recent "reimagined" album "Never Let Me Down" it's quite different. I agree on "Black Tie White Noise" and "Hours..." they're bland, Bowie by numbers mostly. You did not mention the album "Toy" I don't know if it ever had an official CD release, it's okay.

Very cool. PinUps took me decades to discover & I still am. Contextually, I think on this record Bowie was stealth technically exploring his escape from Tony Defries and future career evolution. Forefront, he is searching for a new singing voice (register), so you get some castaways. The way he went from Laughing Gnome voice to Space Oddity voice to Ziggy voice, then on P.U. we get some hints of the future beautiful baritone that would define his classic run Diamond Dogs - Scary Monsters. Check out 'Where Have All the Good Times Gone' (precursor of Ashes to Ashes voice), and 'Sorrow',' has the familiar classic Bowie baritone. Finally, throughout the album, he experiments with vocal effects, 'See Emily' has effects similar to those later employed on Scream Like a Baby (1980). Peace.

Add'l Notes: I was late to Earthling (also drum machines) - Check out my faves: Looking for Satellites, 7 Years in Tibet & Battle of Britain. David Live: my understanding is that it was initially miked incorrectly (Visconti missed his plane), so the mix sucked. The mix was improved on the 2005 remaster.

I know it ain't easy but you've got to give Ziggy Stardust 10/10. Five years from now you'll regret not doing this. So, you love his soul (blue-eyed soul); in the age of moons you can't daydream, you have to look to the star man, or his stardust lady (allegedly Bolan is the Star of this one?). But hang on (to yourself) a minute, Ziggy, the real Ziggy, he played it right hand though he was really left hand and smiled while he played those licks. I know you love space capsules but can you suffer a jet; even in your city? And it is of course suicide not to love rock 'n' roll. Sue was on side one all those years later - nothing changes. I enjoyed your selection (even with its weird - and Gilly - best/worst selections); and I'd like to come and meet you, but I think I'd blow your mind.
