This radio friendly 3 minute single version is a good song, but the 6 minute album version is the greatest song Bowie ever made. The slow buildup elevates his heightened vocals later in the song whereas in this version there’s less of an emotional punch to his change in register.

Ricky Gardiner is playing lead guitar on this version. Gardiner played guitar on Low for Bowie and Lust for Life for Iggy Pop. This backing track was recorded by Tony Visconti the previous day and Bowie sang live over it in front of the TOTP audience.

Not to crack anyone's rose tinted spectacles, but the 29th of October 1977 was a Saturday. Top Of The Pops was Thursday evening. I'd be interested to know the actual date of broadcast, for book research purposes.

Agreed, it's shit. Back then, the bands would record a playback earlier in the day, then sing over it at the recording for TOTP. I read that there was a union stipulation that the BBC orchestra had to be used. They sounded crap. You can hear it on lots of TOTP performances in the 70s, especially when they were trying to do soul, terrible
