You know you're way out there when Bowie covers your song, and his version is considered more normal and commercial sounding than your original.

Good on em for having the balls to do a live version of this song cos it can't have been easy. I like the fact that it's not a carbon copy it keeps the original special but it's good to see Bowie's still prepared to try something different too. Having said that I don't think anyone will ever really improve on the original piece which is truly beautiful.

+dolcegful fyi---Gail and other members of Bowie's band played as part of the Bowie tribute at last month's BRIT AWARDS. Annie Lennox and actor Gary Oldham introduced them...they did super-edits for @2-3 minutes of various Bowie hits, and then did LIFE ON MARS with Lorde.

I'm in NYC...went to the David Bowie tribute (2nd night) at Radio City Music Hall. For me, and many others it was particularly healing..and the performances of BLACK STAR and LAZARUS were: WOW. I saw Bowie once in '83 and all 4 of his NY area shows of GLASS SPIDER TOUR..used to see David @10-12x through the 80s and early 90s...especially at record stores and book stores in lower midtown and the West Village. It was only after he died that I knew that David/Iman had been living on Lafayette Street in Soho/East Village since they got married. A friend confirmed that until they married, that David had lived on W 21st Street. Usually saw David in later PM hours...I often worked until 7pm/special ed. teacher...and hit record stores/book stores on my way home. He was always interested in NEW literature...art...music. I never spoke with him directly...didn't want to take away his anonymity....but often "gave a nod"..as if to say without words "I'm a fan. All the best."
@dolcegful8 жыл бұрын
+Glenn Leahey What a nice story and I know the tribute was wonderful and as you said healing. I have never felt such sadness when a celebrity died in the past. But, David Bowie's death has hit me really hard . Thanks for sharing, it helps.

David Bowie was probably one of just a few rock stars who intuitively understood Laurie Anderson. Around the time of this video, he was convinced she could read minds. A very appropriate friendship between the two of them, certainly.

Mind blowing. I usually say Bowie is my favorite artist. Other times I say it's Laurie. I absolutely love both - and they've been with me, part of me, throughout my life. I know.. I know.. it's Gail Ann here - not Bowie, but I came to know her through his work and she's amazing... When this startedI thought "Oh no... she's ruining it...." but after a short while I was hooked. Amazing.. Just amazing. Too many superlatives? Please excuse me for this. It's just that I have no mind now - it was blown away.

Do you not realize that they are not trying to redefine? Artistic integrity and bringing something into new light is worth more than leaving something and perhaps not introducing it to a group of people who would otherwise not have ever known or cared about it. Gail Ann is a musician, not just a bass player, and it would be shameful if she were to limit herself. I hate it when people say that something should never be covered.

Does nobody else realize that this performance is Laurie AND David? I dunno why it was posted without her name in the title even. I stand with others. The original piece is a piece of art that cannot be copied without losing it's original sheen and elegance. Never the less, it is HER art, and she will do as she will. She performed with David and did the song it's best justice that could be done in Live Arena. The beat doesn't bother me and I do not hear it as a dance beat even. TY for the post!
