Reality, The Next Day, and Heathen are SO GOOD. It is rare that an artist who started in the '60s can keep producing such amazing work in the later era of their career.

I would also say 1. Outside. That album definitely has its problems, but I still think it's a good album, and it's important in Bowie's progression.

And Diamond dogs
@glovishly28 күн бұрын
@@leefr76 Diamond Dogs is great, but I wouldn't necessarily say he needs to do it before Blackstar. Definitely one he should do at some point though.
@wandersonoliveira26326 күн бұрын
@@glovishlyTbh, I think noBowie album is "necessary" before Blackstar (it was my fisrt Bowie), but context does matter. And I do think Diamond Dogs is important context, specially for the shift in vocal texture from the glamy treble nasal voice of the early years to the deep and dark tone of the letter. Also a concept album with the closest Bowie got to doing "heavy" music, I could compare the production to something like Igor, where it intentionally wants to sound kinda screwed up. And come on, Sweet Thing, We Are The Dead, 1984, these are all bangers.
@walterehmann879928 күн бұрын
Such a great Bowie record. Hard to believe it came out right after the Berlin trilogy stuff. Such a cool change of pace. Don’t sleep on Let’s Dance, the album he did after this one. It’s probably his most pop forward but the songs are so damn good.

Let’s Dance is a top notch record ☺️

I'm 65 now and still enjoying ever bowie album. Impossible to say which one is the best and very happy to know that young people still appreciate his music.
@Quonka28 күн бұрын
You can be sure young people appreciate his music. My 12 year old cousin made me start listening to him. She was obsessed with him for a long time, and then I started listening to him and I’ve been in the same boat ever since.
@PoxneliusHubert28 күн бұрын
I'm 17 right now and Bowie was pretty much my gateway into music. He made me appreciate so many genres, even Hip-Hop and now I listen to every genre possible, all the way from 1953 to releases of this year!

Teenage Wildlife is one of the best Bowie songs of all time, at times I feel it's my favorite ever, it's so strong, so dramatic, so powerful. With your question about It's No Game part 1 and 2, I personally feel like the difference represents how when you first find out about the corruption of the world, you're young, you're full of energy and fire, and you scream for change and for something better, but as you grow older and see the same exact problems, you get jaded, you still feel the same about these problems, but you got less edge to protest them, you've gotten tired, and so you grow quieter. That's my interpretation at least.
@pigonthewind790828 күн бұрын
My favourite Bowie record. Maybe because of Teenage Wildlife and Robert Fripp...
@walterehmann879928 күн бұрын
This album ranks way up there for me too on the strength of the players alone. Fripp especially but the whole band is killing it.

I've said it before but you should react to You're Living All Over Me by Dinosaur Jr. It influenced bands like Nirvana, My Bloody Valentine. The Sonic Youth song Teenage Riot is about J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr being president. Kurt Cobain also asked him to join nirvana twice!

What I love about Fashion is how it works with its thematics. It's so repetitive that, whenever the thing you are expecting to happen doesn't happen, it kinda catches you off guard. Like when he says "Turn to left" and you expect him to say "turn to the right" like he said before, but he just says nothing. And you're like "I was caught by fashion, always expecting the same".

You could totally go to Blackstar next, but you're missing a couple of key pieces of the early Bowie jigsaw that kind of informed it - Hunky Dory is full of great individual songs and Aladdin Sane is Ziggy x100. He has lots of other brilliant albums - Diamond Dogs, Let's Dance, Outside, Lodger, Young Americans, you'll find people in the comments recommending all of those as their favourite, and there are more - but whilst they're all really good, personally I'd say only Hunky Dory and Aladdin Sane are genuinely essential to round out your picture of the man who made Blackstar.
@pigammon784328 күн бұрын
as much as it pains me not to ask for Tracey Denim by Bar Italia, Hunky Dory by Bowie is super essential. one track on it was the #2 single on RYM at one point. honestly you can probably check out Aladdin Sane off camera
