David Bowie (commonly known as Space Oddity)is the second studio album by English musician David Bowie. After the commercial failure of his 1967 self-titled debut album, Bowie acquired a new manager, Kenneth Pitt, who commissioned a promotional film in hopes of widening the artist's audience. For the film, Bowie wrote a new song, titled "Space Oddity", a tale about a fictional astronaut

Bowie was great, but there are a lot of other musicians playing on this; part of Bowie's greatness came in finding musicians who were not only good in their own right, but who also complimented Bowie's own talents.

I think I remember Bowie saying he often wrote about feeling isolated. His style often changed, but that was always a common theme for him.

Bowie changed his image and his musical style many times thru the years, but his talent and ability is always consistently apparent.

This guy was ahead of every trend...then others followed it and he created glam-rock. About 5 yrs after this he was on Soul Train, think about that❗ He also showed the world Stevie Ray Vaughan and asked him to play on his "Let's Dance" album and then SRV went on his own and as they say "the rest is history"❗❗

The original UK release was July 1969 in time for the Moon landing. it wasn’t a success at first but eventually reached number five in the charts. Bizarrely it was banned in the states at first. but eventually reached number 15 in 1972 and was his first hit over there. For sure one of the all-time great classics. As usual I suggest look at the Wikipedia entry for this song which will explain almost everything. David’s primary influence was the recently released movie 2001 a space Odyssey which impressed him. He was feeling very alienated at the time and dissatisfied with the progress of his career. But it was never suggested that this song had a drugs connection. Many people like yourselves have tried to over interpret what the song is about with all sorts of fanciful notions. To get the song you have to imagine the context of the time the building excitement and mystery for most people of the approaching launch of Apollo 11 to the moon. Were they really going to make it Or disappear without trace. This was a far out record at the height of the swinging 60s and a lot of strange and new things were happening So this was yet one more very “different” record. David was very anti-drugs having seen what happened to people that he knew. He was a very imaginative and inventive artist and was inspired by the mood of the moment. RIP David. We will never forget you

I think it was actually written because of the Apollo's face program comma but I do agree that there is quite a bit of metaphor that could be attached to it. Thanks for the review and you did great!

It definitely has an alternative meaning to the obvious man in space story it tells on the surface. Knowing Bowie and this stage of his career it could well have been about a bad trip, especially as the follow up tot he story Ashes to Ashes tells that Major Tom is a junkie. but it could also be him dying from an OD

I agree with the dual meaning of an astronaut getting lost (maybe intentionally) and dying in space, along with drug use and overdose.
