Using a turning plow to cover fertilizer in the sugar cane as it comes up through the rye grass, the tractor is using a Harbor Fright 3HP motor with a
1 1/2" drive pully. The original motor is a continental that I am saving for special tractor shows.notice the weights on the front.
The rye grass cover crop will die off in hot weather and stop a lot of the weed .
Notice the weights on front to make the plow easer to lift.

About 55/60 yrs ago, we had one of these. Had about acre or more garden. Pulling a cole planter with a chain was a two person job with daddy yelling you ain't doing it right. The cultivator had 4 plows and did great along with the disc and turning plow. I wish I had a video of my brother and me with a two wheel trailer hooked to it hauling firewood, would not hold back on a hill so I bolted a 2by4 with a piece of barrel stave to rub the tire as a brake, it worked, we survived . Dad was in the bed at the time with his back so I took the Lombard chain saw and cut our fire wood at about 12 yrs old. Even pulled the school bus off one time with it. We thought it was rough but we was happy and didn't lack for nothing. I tell people this sometimes and they just kind of grin a little. World would be a lot better now if everyone had to scratch for themselves instead of handing it to them on a platter. GOD IS STILL GREAT AND STILL IN CONTROL. Thanks for the video.

Thanks Larry for sharing that story with us, I only got my tractor in the early 90s so I haven't been using one as long as you, but I do know about the brakes, check on you tube at ( david bradley pulley size ) this shows two of my carts with brakes.

Do you know if someone could use a David Bradley sickle bar mower to harvest sugar cane?
@billywatson8931
@billywatson8931 4 жыл бұрын
I tried to cut Sorghum cane with the sickle bar and it didn't work, It would cut some and pull some out of the ground. Sugar cane is about 2" dia. at the bottom so I don't think the sickle bar would cut it, a larger sickle bar cutter like a tractor uses might work, but you would have to go slow. Each year when I am out cutting the cane, I say there has got to be a better way to do this than a cane knife. Some people around here use a weed eater with a saw blade, one man pules the cane over and the other cuts it with the weed eater close to the ground, closer than you can cut with a knife, the sweetest part of the cane is at the bottom. I am working alone so I can't use a weed eater. You said that you were starting market gardening , Sugar cane stalks sell for $2, to $3 each, cane juice is around $5. per gallon and syrup from $5. to $9. per pint. Sugar cane will regrow from the stubble for 4 to 5 years be for having to replant. The largest agricultural crop in the world , is sugar cane.

Thank you for sharing this. I'm getting into market gardening and have a David Bradley walk behind tractor. I have been trying to find a way for the tractor to hill my rows. Again I greatly appreciate you sharing your knowledge and showing this demonstration.

I just added a video of cultivating with a hiller attachment, (David Bradley cultivating sugar cane,) the weeds have taken over. The cultivator is the most useful David Bradley implement for a market garden, with several attachments from Sears plus home made equipment . Billy

Just added(David Bradley disking over grown sugar cane, ) I tried the disc, it helped but I am going back to the plow after I lay down some fertilizer and see if I can cover the weeds.

Do you know if there is a way to extend the width of the space in between the wheels on a David Bradley? And what are you using for your weights on the front?
@billywatson8931
@billywatson8931 4 жыл бұрын
one of my videos, ( David Bradley tractor buying ) there is a tractor with pipe extensions between the wheel and rim, looks like a 4 1/2" pipe 3" long on each side with long bolts going through the rims. The round metal I am using for weights came from an old plow axel, the weights are 25 lb. notice the extensions on the front moving the weight further forward , the hole where the weights mount is also used for a swivel wheel some time. When I carry the tractor in my truck, the front extension keeps the tractor from hitting the inside.

Also some wheels can be turned around adding some width

How deep are you going? Looks like maybe 2"? Would it cut 6-8"?
@billywatson8931
@billywatson8931 2 жыл бұрын
The plow will cut about 8" or so. in this video I am making shallow cuts just enough to cover the fertilizer I scattered between the rows. When I am plowing, I set to full depth and about 6" to 8" wide by adjusting the right wheel width.

I'm restoring a db. Needed tires I ran across a very nice used almost new set of 6.5×16 cheap they aren't ag tires though more of a car tire. Do u think chains are going to nesassary for the plow and disc?

Try the tires and see if they will pull well enough with out chains , if they spin then try filling them with water, and or wheel weights.

Thanks for the comments, There seems to be a lot of interest in these tractors, I believe that if Sears were to sell them today a lot of people would buy them
