Here is our David Brown 1490 in action - one of the last of the great British tractors!
January 21, 2013 - plenty of snow but not that cold, -1C.
One viewer has pointed out that the 1490 was not the last David Brown made. In fact David Brown continued to make tractors for four more years after the 1490, ending in 1988.

Hi Jim The heater plug has been tested (not by me) and is working. I have a plan, but whether it will ever become reality, who knows. I am going to take out the injectors and get them tested, and at the same time get a pressure test done. I am also going to fit a block heater, if I can get details of correct one to buy. I've had the tractor a couple of years now and I am slowly growing to like it. kind regards Tom

I've got a block heater on my 1390, and it does a much more effective job than the manifold heater. My battery would never stand up to that much cranking. Of course, the less cylinders you've got, the harder it is to start.

thats not true at all about the less cylinders you have the harder it is to start, you couldnt be more far from it

Had you still got " summer " diesel in this , it,s slightly thicker , & does this in winter , could be an idea to change all fuel filter elements , & as the person below says , there is an excess fuel tap underneath the injector pump on most of these D.B. engines , have a look , these were made right up in a ravine in the Pennines , I,m sure it got very cold in winter , so as the person below also says , check out your thermostart device , it,s probably burnt out , & doing nothing ! It can pass electrical power but still not "open " & burn fuel , be careful , if it works it resembles a little flamethrower ! I like the old D.B.,s , Best Regards .

Fine video sir, I hope your business are doing well because it sounds like you'll have to put your money on some engine overhaul pretty soon. The engines compression must be down low like the dancer girls on a nightclub after midnight. I whish you all the best greetings from Sweden.

Hi Jesper Point taken. I was thinking more about in the history of British tractors, this one came near the end - not sure when the end actually was. Kind regards Tom

Don't keep trying to start it like that, you will wear out the battery, nice tractor though.

That,s not a 1988 model year...it,s before 1985. The last tractors made by David Brown was the 94-series---from 1194 to 1694. The wery last one--was a 1594--1988 model year

might be your heater plug isnt working too good - my 1390 can be a slow starter - when you heat the engine u need to hold the key against the spring - just before the starter engages- easy to check if the heater plug isn't working take it out the inlet manifold -turn the key to "heat" and she should start glowing and smoking as the diesel gets pumped into it replacements are only 20 quid or so - rock solid old tractor though - very smart :-)

COLD? -1C? here its nice with -20 and the MF 35 starts perfect without heating and also the 4WD Zetor 6745 from -79 does too... no need to crank so much for those farmtoys.. :) but still, nice video. :)

Hi Coleman Great to hear you enjoy the video. I sold the 1490 to my neighbour - sad about it in a way, but he has a use for it and it was just standing in the yard. The video lives on Kind regards Tom

The turn screw on the underside of a DPA fuel injection pump is not an excess fuel device, it retards the timing to help cold starting. It by passes the hydraulic advancer (into which it is fitted). You have to reset it once the engine has started or it will misfire and lack power.

I'm afraid it came with the tractor, so I don't know where it came from! I was surprised to see a block heater on a Texas tractor, though, considering a "brutal cold snap" here is when it stays below freezing for more than 24 hours.

David browns ceased production after the 995, 1210, and 1410. After that JI Case, owned by tenneco produced tractors in Europe under the David Brown name. When in reality they were Case.

YOUR 1490 ENGINE NEEDS A RE-BUILD AS THE BORES ARE GLAZED & ALSO THE SMALL END BEARING IS GONE ON A CON-ROD AS YOU HEAR IT KNOCKING. LACKAGE OF CHANGING OIL REGULAR & NOT GIVING IT HARD WORK HAS RUINED THE ENGINE. WHAT A WASTE!!!
