Robert Fripp did play on the original recording do this song in 1979. The Talking Heads worked with him and later with Adrian Belew, but I’m pretty sure the real inspiration for the instrumental part of the song came from Afrobeat music by musicians like Fela Kuti.

P.S. King Crimson’s “Thela Hun Ginjeet” was released in 1981 and featured Adrian Belew on vocals. These musicians all knew each other, worked with each other, and couldn’t help but be influenced by each other.
