The thing I kept thinking about whenever he mentioned the balloon was scale: the fact that you can change the pressure inside of a balloon is due to the empty space between the molecules that comprise the air. Also, those molecules are made of atoms that are essentially a given amount of volume of mostly empty space. So, yeah, we don't experience a vacuum in a balloon, but if we shrank down to the size of, say, an electron, our point of view would be that there is an endless amount of vacuum.

It's not the CMB that we use to measure the expansion of the universe. We use changing spectrum of light from stars. Specifically red-shift. The same doppler effect we experience with sound. The change of pitch as objects travel towards us or away from us is also found in the properties of light. Stars and galaxies expanding away from us red-shift or change progressively towards infrared or the "redder" part of the spectrum stars coming towards us shift towards the ultraviolet part of the spectrum or blue-shift. Since everywhere we look everything is red-shifted and the farther away the farther shifted objects are we can tell not only the the universe is expanding but that expansion is accelerating.

You would lose the bet because David is smart enough to use Google, but David is also smart enough to know that the big bang is not supported by physics without employing Newton's 2nd Law of Motion. David rightly assumes you are referring to momentum, which has nothing to do with Genesis of the cosmos but errantly incorporated into big bang fiction along with fraudulent mathematics which proposes highly delusional claims of exponential increases in velocity of expansion based on absolute creative lying. David has never been trained in physics and you correctly assumed he doesn't know the laws of Newton and that is absolutely true, but David doesn't need to know Newton or his laws because David understands that everything about the metaphysics of the cosmos is supernatural and has nothing to do with physics. The big bang is purely a theistic postulate with no support within physics, but completely possible by an outside force or Deity, though completely impossible by any physical mechanism.

David's balloon analogy could be valid if he could show that the assumption underlying the analogy holds. The analogy describes the interaction between the pressures inside and outside this universe, which implies that it is assumed that the same laws of thermodynamics govern the realm outside this universe as they do this one. Since we have no data on anything outside this universe, it is impossible to prove the veracity of this assumption.
