I made a comment 6 months ago about the reason Simon left the show and I stand by it after watching this again. David Cook was THE BEST pure singer the show had ever seen. He did it HIS way, he didn't go the pre-packaged route of Kelly and Carrie. David was the best talent the show had ever seen. Doesn't Matt have his own video to comment on? He did fine for his range and interpretation - maybe Matt Cardle fans could go find 'his' video and say that you like it? There seems to be a pattern of other people's fans coming to David Cook's videos and 'trying' to downgrade his performance to make their people look better. Yes the song was written by Ewan MacColl a folk political singer. He wrote the song as challenge by someone to see if he could write a love song without any politics in it.

Sorry, I got ahead of myself. When Ewan wrote it for Peggy, they were not yet married, but would .later marry. Her 'Folk Song' version of it can be found here on KZbin, and the History of the song and of Ewan and Peggys relationship can be Googled. She was indeed married to Pete when the song was written, and she and Ewan were 'involved' with each other at the time.

Frankly, when I heard Simon chose this song. I have hoped David would rock it up a bit more like he did to Hello, with a lot of rocker mix-in. I think David, at this stage, wanted to play safe (or a bit drained, he was a lot witty and stressed-free when he sang hello) and did more a ballad than a rock. It's more toward his Music of the Night performance than Hello performance. But don't get me wrong. This is my most favorite song of the night and I love it. But I am a tiny bit disappointed.
