That was so beautifully heartbreaking, if that makes sense. I love the line about "crying salt into an open wound" and how that ties together David's/the speaker's sadness with a well-known idiom. It also conveys the idea that by wallowing in his despair he is causing himself more pain, but as anyone who's been through a painful break-up knows, you can't just pick yourself up by your bootstraps (at least you shouldn't, because that probably means you're emotionally suppressing something). Healing is a process. It sounds like he's drinking away the pain during the course of the song while also in denial about his love leaving (hoping she will wait for him wherever she is going). I'll have to listen to the song a few more times to gauge if I'm interpreting it correctly, but like I said, it's so sad, yet so beautifully expressed.
