Sir Edward William Elgar (1857-1934) was an English composer, among whose best-known compositions are orchestral works including the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, concertos for violin and cello, and two symphonies.
Salut d'Amour: Elgar finished the piece in July 1888, when he was engaged to be married to Caroline Alice Roberts, and he called it "Liebesgruss" ('Love’s Greeting') because of Miss Roberts’ fluency in German. When he returned home to London on 22 September from a holiday at the house of his friend Dr. Charles Buck, in Settle, he presented it to her as an engagement present.
At the age of 16, the composer became a freelance musician and for the remainder of his life never took a permanent job. He conducted locally, performed, taught, and composed, scraping by until his marriage to Caroline Alice Roberts, a published novelist of some wealth, in 1889.
In 1899, Elgar composed one of his best-known works, the "Enigma" Variations, Op. 36, which catapulted him to fame. The work is a cryptic tribute to Alice and to the many friends who stood behind the composer in the shaky early days of his career.
Elgar's most fruitful period was the first decade of the twentieth century, during which he wrote some of his noblest, most expressive music, including the first four of his Pomp and Circumstance Marches; the first of these, subtitled "Land of Hope and Glory", became an unofficial second national anthem for the British Empire.
In 1919 Elgar wrote the masterly Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85, whose deep feeling of sadness and impending loss surely relates to the final illness of his faithful Alice, who died in 1920.
In the early 1930s, Elgar set to work on a third symphony, left unfinished at his death in 1934.

My dear friend Lilia, what a pleasure it is to read your comments on my videos. It is a pleasure for me to share my videos I make of David and his music. I derive great satisfaction in making the videos and selecting the music and photos to go with the music, and your most welcome comments and from others make the hard work worthwhile when I read good honest comments like yours Lilia. I am really pleased you enjoyed reading the information on Elgar. Elgar, came very depressed when the first world war 1 broke out and if you ever listen to his Cello concerto, you will actually feel his depression within the music. I think the concerto was composed during the summer of 1919 at Elgar's secluded cottage "Brinkwells" near Fittleworth, Sussex, where he had heard the sound of the artillery of World War I rumbling across the Channel at night from France and Elgar became somewhat depressed that very soon the enemy would soon be treading on his beloved England! The first movement expresses his deep sadness of world war 1 which you can clearly hear throughout the concerto. Dear friend Ștefania, thank you from my heart for your lovely comment. I'm sorry to tell you I have was in hospital from the 5th to the 10th of September with my breathing problem - I am now on three different lung sprays so now back home.and feeling a bit better. Please do not worry, my brother and family are helping me. I feel better today and maybe tomorrow even a bit more better. I can still do work on my videos of our David and I have almost completed my October video - The piece of music I have used is one of the most beautiful pieces that David has ever played and he plays it with great feeling and depth that it enters your very soul and it gives a warm yet compassionate feeling for the music that only David could express with his wonderful performance.
