It was more subtle than expected, but the pick-attack gave it away. You usually just don't hear a strat's "twang" through a Big Muff, so when you switched to Pedal B in the Time solo and I could hear a bit of that "twang" shine through, I immediately knew what I was listening to.

It's a more complicated multistage circuit. The sound comes more from the design and filtering etc etc. The fuzz face is very simple but has a unique behaviour and relies on the transistors and their biasing. Most faces can be trimmed to sound "good" with different trannies but rarely they sound the "same". Muffs are easier to sound "same" with different transistors and the right tweaks.

The fuzz face has more shrill and spitty treble. I recognized the muff already in the slide down the E-string. So fluid and still so broken, muff is in a league of its own.

@@bluwng nah...the fuzz face has more treble, sounds harsher. The Big Muff has significantly more bottom, less mids and less treble...and for that, sounds smoother. Great video Martin. You inspired to get out the strat and do some more practice. Already trying to learn the solo to Money, now I have to add Time onto the list. For me, the Big Muff nails the rich tone, that Fuzz Face has a bit too much treble. Oh and it feels like your playing rocks up a level when you use the BM as well. Maybe I'm biassed, the Fuzz Face was the first pedal I ever tried, it was always a bit overpowering and couldn't get a good sound from it but I do have an EH BM from the 70's which just knocks me out every time, no matter what amp or guitar. Thanks for the settings too !

The personality and tone of a strat comes through the Fuzzface more than the Big Muff, to my ears. Big Muffs can sound woofy and a little wooly. There’s a shimmer to the Fuzzface that I think is more elegant. Thanks for making this video!

That was a great comparison, I was surprised at how subtle the differences were. I want to get a pedal to complement my Tonebender, seems like the Fuzz Face would be the appropriate choice, a bit more trebly and sparkly than the Muff. The Muff seems to be closer to the creamy, meaty sound of the tonebender.
@MartinFrydas

Excellent! I've been wrestling with the problem, how do you set up a pedal board if one of your guitars is going to use active pickups like EMGs? Gilmour's Pulse-era Red Strat had these type pickups. These pickups employ a battery, making the guitar practically incompatible with a fuzz-face. Gilmour didn't use a fuzz-face with his EMG equipped red strat! People complain a Muff is too dark to use in a live band. Gilmour addressed that by boosting the Muff with an overdrive pedal that imparts a strong tone control, a trick I surmise boosts the hell out of the treble without blowing up the bass and destroying the arena! Add Delays to this and you get sonic heaven! To my knowledge, the man has never said an actionable word about it to the thousands of guitarists out there.

Sounds awesome. But I think the RW board kinda smushes out them ripping “bowed” sounds on the bends like when the time solo does the first penta arpeggio followed by the bend on b string…it “rips” when DG played it. Another example is EJ’s Dover into the first bend he does on the b string sounds like a muscle cars tires “ripping” on the pavement. Best sound ever in terms of dirty sounding bending in songs with astonishing tone.

Martin Frydas haha or maybe luck. But still in my opinion the muff had some thickness. Recently i did a little treble booster comparison on my channel. What i meant: treble booster, into (A/B) Ac30 tone like pedal. For instance Actone by harley benton/joyo vs a tube driver like chandler/butler. Since people use the latter pedal to create a brian may style. The sixpence vs plectrum is also a possibility. And of course when the time is right, and you know how to upgrade the Harley bentom bm75 wiring. A red special/bm75 comparison

Through the cellphone speaker, the difference is so subtle that it's negligible. They both sound like Gilmour.

Gotta say i don't hear a real difference to justify having both...i have a deluxe big muff currently and sounds like you can dial in close enough with either of these to make it work (if you're this guy anyway lol)

Great playing! Not hard to figure out which is which, but anyway, sound is not as important than the feel is and you feel very different playing FC or BM. If you feel right, you'll play great, if not, you'll play shit. That's all that matters really, the performance. That's why I don't like all this modelling technology, it sounds the same but feels dead. But that's just me.

Fuzz=little more "spiky" and less of that smooth sustain. Midrange quite pronounced. Splat on the front end! Muff=smoother, still some splat, but on Money the midrange difference was a dead giveaway. Time was remarkably close! Caveat: not all Fuzz and Muffs created equal!
