I can only imagine how many lives Goggins has changed. I read his book a few months ago and since then I run at minimum a 5k every single day no matter what and I don’t see myself ever stopping. His energy is infectious. Thank you David Goggins. Update: now it’s November 7th 2021. I now run atleast 4 miles day while usually going over. I’ve lost about 50 pounds and I wake up at 5am everyday to run and always have energy to do so. I feel so amazing. I’m a husband and father of 3 including 1 year old twins. The running pretty much destroys all my stress and I rarely get frustrated during the day. I’m beyond happy I found David Goggins. My life has changed drastically and I feel absolutely amazing. Stay Hard! I’ll check back in awhile after putting in even more work. Checking in again. It’s March 7th now and I’m still getting after it on a daily basis. No pain to speak of other than a little lower back pain but nothing a good stretch won’t help out. Running has made every aspect of my life better. I just turned 26 last month and I feel 18!

@Despize Perform Mental suffering often but not always comes from the fact that someone is suffering in another way or they don't have the time to ever fully process their mental state. People in developing countries without a lot of worldly possessions do not show a lot of depression or anxiety because their other problems distract from things like that, I know that when I was super stressed about the possibility of me becoming homeless I didn't feel lonely or depressed, I had other problems that didn't let my brain have time for depression.

Goggins helped me get into by far the best shape of my life. I started skinny fat,out of shape and with fear of gyms. Had no clue what's a good diet and what to actually do in the gym. At first I would only go at night. I would wait outside untill everybody was gone and only then go in. That's how much I lacked in confidence. I was not even ready for people to see me work out. I felt like a fake. But that's what always kept me behind. Not having trust in myself. With help from Goggins I decided this time it will be different. So I kept at it. I went back over and over and over again untill I saw some progress and that's where confidence and motivation slowlry started to get bigger and bigger. By the end of this process I was among the most fit people in the entire gym. A the peak I was doing 2 hour workouts 4x a week while increasing the load every single week. From stretching, lifting weights, working with my own weight, cardio. I didn't skip anything. I didn't even mess with cheat meals. And I also decided that I will not share my progress on social media. I didn't want that type of validation. I did share photos with the gym owner and I have to admit it felt nice when I realized he was sending those photos to some of the other gym members. The skinny fat guy ended up lookin like a poor man's verison of Brad Pitt in Fight Club lol . The grind was real. All this was done without me having a driving licene. Was never able to get it becasue of my anxiety. Failed a driving test multiple times. ( another reason for the lack of confidence I have ). The gym is about 6 miles away from my home so I had to take the buss every time to get there and get back home. I also have artritis and even though I take ibuprofen for it,on some days my body felt like shit. Specially my joints. And to make things worse, second covid lockdowns happend. At first they complelty closed all gyms. But I was not ready to lose my progress. So I found a program to work at home. No bike,no weights, nothing. I was breaking sweat for 2 hours on the yoga mat in my living room. Finally they open the gym again but only 1 person at the time is allowed and on top of that public transporation was still in lockdown. Thankfully the guy that owns the gym, always squezed me into the schedule. And for transporation I payed my dad,my friends,my brother etc. anybody who had the time to take me there. And thankfully they all did and I made sure their time was worth it. Later, the public transporation was back on and things went back to normal. I simply did not allow these obstacles to get into the way of my progress.... The best part was not that I had a good looking body, but how much confidence I gained. And most importantnly my depression went away. All this by simply having discipline and stickting to it. No magic. On most days it was not pretty. All these motivational speakers tell you how amazing you have to feel while in reality that's not how it is. Simply accepting that in order to feel happy and content with yourself, you will have to do some hard work that sucks,is a much more helpfull advice. So yeah. Take baby steps, but take them. Stick with it trough thick and thin and your mind will thank you later.

As someone that’s extremely intense and gets after it, sports background whole life and extremely driven, gym 6 days a week for years 12 pack abs, triathlons etc… there’s also an emptiness that can occur in getting in amazing shape and suffering daily when you realize life is still the same, most people don’t care and in fact it will make them feel not connected to you and you will start to feel this ostracization. you’re filling a hole that will just need to be filled again, we can get caught in a cycle of trying to prove something to ourselves and to others instead of being content and present. I go out on my bday every year and do physical challenges, mountain runs, ocean swim, bike ride etc but the truth is no one cares and unless you’re David it just irritates most people makes them think you’re weird. and truth is my bday might be better spent relaxing being around friends and family and taking it all in. The higher you climb up the mountain and separate yourself from others the more lonely it becomes. You’re on a totally different wavelength and it’s hard to connect and relate to others. So difficult to put into words. You don’t eat the same you don’t have the same habits or interests. You don’t think or react emotionally the same. Loneliness and separation. Just my experience and I’m looking to find balance now after spending my 20’s and most my 30’s trying to suffer everyday and prove that my fire inside is different. I was only proving it to myself. Being in tremendous physical and mental shape. Discipline and determination. It just disconnects you from most other humans and that kinda sucks and that’s how it will be for most of us unless you’re famous like David goggins getting accolades and praise for it and knowing you’re inspiring others. Of course for him it’s worth it and it’s his brand and way of life. For Most of us it’s an empty achievement that still should be pursued because to stay stagnant is definitely not the answer, but it has to come with balance and perspective.

Everyone does the bare minimum to stay alive; it's the things we add that require unremitting and fearless investigation as to their wholesomeness or unwholesomeness. In doing so, one tosses out bad habits, keeps good ones, and when appropriate turns previously habitual actions into fully conscious procedures. It is a mistake to think that discipline/determination only increases via what looks on the outside to be heavier and heavier loads. The man who pushes his body relentlessly only to return to a dirty home, or a tenuous relationship with his spouse, or perhaps a sense of dissatisfaction with life and others, undoubtedly has more investigation to do. Should he choose to take this investigation to its utmost limit and act upon the results without complacency, he will have developed all the discipline he needs to be sufficient, to be satisfied, dare I say even happy. It is just this: In every moment, look at what you're doing, right *here* and right *now*. Do that long enough (another word for discipline is patience) and things will straighten out naturally. Nobody has to tell a child to take her hand off the hot stove; she has the innate wisdom to act properly. In the same way, no one has to tell the person who has gathered enough wisdom (via disciplined investigation) not to do a, b, or c thing that makes him feel dissatisfied or unhappy, because he knows for himself in a very, very deep way. In any case good luck with finding your answer, friend. I don't know you nor your situation; these are just my thoughts, for what it's worth.

So true! You hit the nail on the head man. Noone talks about this ever..And forget mentioning it on a Goggins related post! They will say you're a loser. Balance is for sure key. "Stay HArd" is like the slogan Nike's "Just Do it"..elementary and simple enough to speak to masses of people trying to "tap into their fullest potential" while ignoring what the consequences of being a "human machine" really means to ones life, socially and mentally. There is clearly something inspiring about achieving great feats (while showing your before and after pictures) as it speaks to something archetypal in the human psyche ( as served the heroic gods or mythological stories in the past) and serves for a kind of delusional inspiration and fuel (i admit, we need a little dose of this from time to time) for people suffering or chasing goals. It's also just a simple enough message to not have to claim responsibility for any type of mental or social consequences because if you claim that it does, then really, "you're just failing" or "being a complaining and whiney bitch." So in a way, the branding itself is a kind of genius enough slogan and way of life to avoid any type of critique, because in fact, as Goggins claims, "the human mind" is basically your enemy (in one aspect it can be, but more so if you continue to acknowledge it and frame it as such). This is a similar method and message as to how "spiritual" Gurus hook and get thousands of people following them. A chasing of ideals and ultimately not grasping the entirely of reality, especially their local reality. There are definite social consequences to pursuing life this way and to my mind, it perfectly fits into a society (even if at firsthand it appears as productive) narcissistic and obsessed with the self, personal growth, and making money. I'd love to speak to his kids or wife and actually see how shit goes down on a social level..i'm sure it ain't that pretty! The hardness and toughness and inspiration masks a very individualistic ( and as Goggins says , fuck people!) kind of approach to life. Isolation is a typical consequence, but tricky because the message claims that you SHOULD be isolated, because you're SPECIAL or RARE in your strength and abilities, etc. and most people are "lazy" or failures (because of the slothful enemy that is their own mind, of course). On the one hand I admire the will it takes to take control of ones body and fitness (I have personal experience with this and its great), on the other, it's such a sad and overly simplistic way of life that forces you into dulling your life's interests, and as you mentioned, unless you're trying to be am ambassador of fitness ideals (like Goggins) or trying to excel in a system that already has a preconceived set of mechanical training pursuits and expected outcomes set out for you (like the Navy, or any military style branch) then prepare for a life of isolation and for all other aspects of your life to suffer. But as you wrote, it might not dawn on you until later in life! Thanks for sharing truth!

100% - I’ve lived this way for years and developed a greek god body and still live ”hard” but I realized I missed out so much in life to be that hard person. It’s all about balancing that savage mode with personal connections etc. Problem is it’s really hard to connect to people when living like this and Love, social connections is very important to live a fulfilled life. You in a way make yourself to something very few people can understand and while that feeling is great other people can’t understand you. While that discipline and hard work carry you in all areas of life it’s easy to get in to a very hard mindset about everything else in life. I think the key is to be a savage but not to neglect the other areas of life.

I think the important takeaway in understanding “intentional suffering” is that people who choose to not do actions which cause suffering do so “likely” because they observe an amount that, to them, is overwhelming. I would still prescribe to anyone suffering from outside stressors to make your own suffering. It balances one’s view of the world and how to react to things. If all you do is see that which you did not cause or create as a negative object or experience you will become a negative fuck, live an unhappy life, and miss out on a lot of positive experiences. If you have this issue try to create your own suffering that has a positive outcome.

I met Goggins once before I went in to the Navy. My "motivator" was one of his Phase 3 BUDS instructors. He told me "this motherfucker was the instructor whose attention you did not want" to which he replied, "well I had to chill out for the DEP recruits." Aside from that, he just seemed like a pretty normal dude to me. It wasn't until later that I found out who he was and how intense he was. He was just keeping it clean because there were news cameras around. Kind of bummed I didn't know anything about him when I met him though.
