The One I Love Lyrics:
Gonna close my eyes
Girl and watch you go
Running through this life darling
Like a field of snow
As the tracer glides
In its graceful arc
Send a little prayer out to ya
'Cross the falling dark
Tell the repo man
And the stars above
You're the one I love
Perfect summer's night
Not a wind that breathes
Just the bullets whispering gentle
'Mongst the new green leaves
There's things I might have said
Only wish I could
Now I'm leaking life faster
Than I'm leaking blood
Tell the repo man
And the stars above
You're the one I love
You're the one I love
The one I love
Don't see Elysium
Don't see no fiery hell
Just the lights up bright baby
In the bay hotel
Next wave coming in
Like an ocean roar
Won't you take my hand darling
On that old dancefloor
We can twist and shout
Do the turtle dove
And you're the one I love
You're the one I love
The one I love

As a British ex-military man, I find this track extremely moving and contemplative. My action was in 1982 and it still affects me to this day. It's good to have music that makes us stop for a moment and realise just how lucky we are, and to remember those that we left on patrol. Excellent track Mr Gray!

You the second ex army to have written on this and I suppose it's alot of meaning to every one: but I can't imagine what you have seen or any army man :I was suppose to join army to be medic nurse but things happend and could go :I done training just not enough due to health problems :I was only 17 going on 18 and often wander what my life would be like if I would have joined army :chin up sir you served country all the best 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️

@@catherinegallagher1101 Thanks for your reply and kind words Catherine. I was actually Royal Navy, but did two tours down in the Falklands, having been attacked and sunk by Argentine aircraft the first time around and then volunteering to return to Port Stanley as soon as I could. Brothers in Arms by Dire Straights also has the same effect on me, which was penned by Mark Knopfler at the time it was all going on. Follow your dreams! All the best!

I was a Corpsman (combat medic for the US Marine Corps) and this one always made me think of a man dying on the battlefield, with his last thoughts on this mortal plane being of his wife. I suppose we've both seen some things which make us relate to this song more than most.

Recently, I heard this song again while driving with my Irish neighbor. I stopped again and he told me the song is by David Gray. When my first child was born, she had a lot of complications and spent most of her first 6 months in different hospitals. Some weren't close to home, and I had to drive hours to see her every night. I played this album every time, and it got me there (the hospital) and through the tough times... She eventually got better and got to come home, 13 years later and she's become a beautiful young lady, who appreciates life and Everything she has. To the families I met that didn't get to take there babies home, I send Nothing but love and positive thoughts. I'll never forget you and the support. I love you all, and I love you too David Gray. Life is beautiful, especially in slow motion...

I think this line is very important to the message of the song. I believe it's coming from a dying man who believes that his efforts and will carry weight, hence the line. His dying thoughts are to say, "Let them know how important you are to me, so they know to be gentle with".

I pray for you, I pray for your out come to be positive too...you are important and you can make a difference to many more with your life. Find out what your purpose is. Share what's really on your heart. Ask for what you need...people can and will help you if you ask and be faithful and truthful.... blessings to you♡

The more you listen to this song, the better it gets and the more secrets it gives up, without quite letting you have them all. So many of the comments on here have really nailed it. I'm an ex-cop and have seen the light fade in people's eyes as their life slips away, and these lyrics take that theme and soar. There's a former combat medic down here who's seen all that and much worse. When I hear these words, I can't help thinking of a mortally wounded WWI soldier lying in no-man's land but it's kind of irrelevant as it defies time and place, like all good poetry. Because that's what it is. David Gray is grossly under-rated. Songs like this are in the same class as Springsteen and Dylan. They're life stories compressed into a few minutes of genius. I'm trying to get a contracted novel submitted on time and am stuck on a scene of departure. I listen to this and wish I could download this guy's brain. That's why I'm waffling on here instead! Whatever it is that's brought you to this link, wherever you are, good luck and best wishes.

@Mark Knowles, Your poetic soul is evident in how you express yourself. And hope you don't mind me saying, but that is something most cops are sadly lacking. I'm so glad you were one of the good ones, if there were more like you, the current state of the police force would be much different. Since you've often been present when the life goes away, I have to ask you if you've ever felt the spirit (or soul, essence, however you want to say it) of the person hovering around you right after... I've read some fascinating accounts of EMTs who experienced this, and wondered if you did too..

@@alyson6506 Thank you, Alyson, I appreciate your comments. I must say though, I was proud to work with some outstanding men and women in London (are you UK or US based, if you don't mind my asking?). The media - and the government, for that matter - are no friends of the police. As a result, not only are the UK police increasingly under-resourced, they are also painted in a deliberately poor light by the media, most of whom are hand-in-glove with gov't. It was a depressing situation, trying to report good news stories to some of the bigger press: they simply weren't interested! Doubtless the derisory rates of pay for new police officers are turning off those looking to make a longer term career out of it: I dare say this is having, or will have, an impact upon calibre as well. Anyway, off my soapbox... To answer your question, I haven't. One of the reasons for this is simply that we often arrived during scenes of sheer mayhem, during which it was impossible to hear yourself think. There is, absolutely, a moment at which you see the life fade from someone's eyes. It is like the sensation of turning off a lamp and seeing the glow fade from the back of your eyelids. I certainly would not scoff at anybody who who does claim to have experienced it, however. Also, I can recall a few occasions when both my operator and I have experienced certain things that made us look at each other mid-conversation, and made the hairs on our nape stand on end. One of which was outside a famous pub in Hampstead, outside which the last woman to be hanged in the UK shot dead her motor-racing lover. 2am, streetlights on, nothing particularly remarkable about the weather: it certainly wasn't cold and the engine had been running in our response car. As we drank coffee on our break (and this is often reported on by the press as being something we shouldn't be allowed to do, even if we're outside and 'available', as it were!), we both felt the presence of somebody alongside the passenger side door. It was like a shadow in our peripheral vision and the temperature plummeted: I mean, ice cold inside a warm car. Oddly, we both later came to the same conclusion, that it was a woman, not a man (as one might expect so near the site of the victim's death). We didn't hang about, I can tell you! There are other stories but I won't bore you.

@@markknowles8498 Thank you for your insightful reply. I am US based, and all I can say is the police force here seems to have taken a drastic turn for the worse in the past few decades. When I was growing up, there were never any reports about police shootings of unarmed citizens, or anything like the George Floyd incident. They were peace officers, surrounded by a sense of trust. I don't really know what happened to turn that all around, but I'm positive the easy access to guns here played a huge part in it. In this regard the UK is far superior to the US, because I believe your cops don't carry guns, right? And I think it's extremely difficult to even get a firearm in the UK. That's where the US police force has gone off the rails, thinking they have to arm themselves to the hilt because they might be going after a shooter with multiple assault rifles and god knows what else. The police used to be trained to draw their weapons only as an absolute last resort in any situation, and now it seems more often than not it's the exact opposite,. Many of them come across as overly aggressive, trigger happy and out of control...to think they were ever called 'peace' officers is laughable. Anyway, I'm sure you and your fellow UK officers didn't share this type of mentality, and I know there are still many good cops in the US that unfortunately you hardly hear about anymore. Well I could keep ranting about this, but I'd rather ask you to share more of those stories like sensing a presence, etc. I am fascinated by this kind of thing, and even though I've never experienced it myself I firmly believe that it does happen, and it's not all fantasy and hallucination. I've pretty much had a paradigm shift of my worldview in recent years, have seen and heard about things I would've never thought possible ~ so yes please, bring on your stories!
