We know everything about Marx, class exploitation, markets, commodity fetishism and still we cannot change a thing. Still, after being exploited at work for 8 hours I enjoy this lectures in my leisure time.

Define exploitation

@@jesusmariacasaltorres2488 That the majority of your labour power is utilised by the owner of the means of production. To make a profit, capitalists have to pay you less than what your labour is worth, if you produced 20 chairs, they would have to pay you less than the worth of the chairs you produced (so you would get what 2-3 chairs is worth). So they make most of the money despite the fact they didn't actually do the work. You know that you could just google this right?

In less than an hour, man lucidly defines the insanity of how we live and why. This might be my new favorite video on youtube. And no one is watching it.

He certainly did a good job of making me more aware of the connections/influences/after-effects etc. of the system so many have been so vehemently praising for so long a time. I have been interested in this topic and many connected to it for some years, but after this video, as you say lucidly presented in less than an hour, I actually feel I have some 'solid' points to refer to now for my own understanding and for arguing the case with other people.

And two years after your comment only a hundred more liked it despite 39.294 have seen it so far, and sometimes people ask why there's no significative change, it seems pretty obvious.

This man is raising the IQ of the whole world. Great man - talks a lot of sense and therefore is naturally avoided by the mainstream media.

One of the best, if not the best economic explanations I have ever heard of how we got here, the insane growth of China and the enormous trap we unwittingly created for ourselves. I hope to live long enough to see how we get out of this mess. I loved Mr. Harvey’s analysis of the consequences of the biggest financial heist in history, perpetrated by my fellow brokers on Wall Street.

@22:40 here he refers to Bernaysian Propaganda “The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. ...We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of. This is a logical result of the way in which our democratic society is organized. Vast numbers of human beings must cooperate in this manner if they are to live together as a smoothly functioning society. ...In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conduct or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons...who understand the mental processes and social patterns of the masses. It is they who pull the wires which control the public mind.” ― Edward Bernays, my Great Great Grandfather's Nephew. And who can forget *Newsweek: “A Cult of Ignorance”* by Isaac Asimov, January 21, 1980 It’s hard to quarrel with that ancient justification of the free press: “America’s right to know.” It seems almost cruel to ask, ingenuously, ”America’s right to know what, please? Science? Mathematics? Economics? Foreign languages?” None of those things, of course. In fact, one might well suppose that the popular feeling is that Americans are a lot better off without any of that tripe. There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that “my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.” There are 200 million Americans who have inhabited schoolrooms at some time in their lives and who will admit that they know how to read (provided you promise not to use their names and shame them before their neighbors), but most decent periodicals believe they are doing amazingly well if they have circulations of half a million. It may be that only 1 per cent-or less―of American make a stab at exercising their right to know. And if they try to do anything on that basis they are quite likely to be accused of being elitists. I contend that the slogan “America’s right to know” is a meaningless one when we have an ignorant population, and that the function of a free press is virtually zero when hardly anyone can read.

as you mentioned Nanjing City in china where my family lives now. I totally agree with what David said about china building cities not to live in but to invest in. Almost all the colleagues and friends of my brother invest all of their money on housing .some of they even have 3 mortgages. He of course is thinking of buying another one too while he and his wife each already has a house ...

This is one of the best lectures by David Harvey. With a little dose of socialism, he perfectly elicits the flaws of capitalism. I bet the belt and road initiative is based on David Harvey's vision.

An idea that both democrats and republicans might agree with : why can't we just keep printing while needed enough money in fiat($) or crypto currencies to give every man, woman and child in the US, $1,000.00 each. Did we not just print over $15T adding to the debt? Expected runaway inflation did not happen. Economist might say this is naive thinking; hope somebody can tell me why. I heard where some economists have said debt does not matter anymore. If so print to give to those who need it. Forget for now about fighting over taxes. With the 1k seed money for everyone there'll be a lot more business and money made maybe more than enough for everyone. There should then be enough money for everyone to enjoy the fruits of technology which I suspect will get cheaper still despite the printing - think abundance on account of technology and automation. The rich and business people would be ecstatic with the idea because there will be a lot more people who can buy their stuff and service. Yes - the big ones will become even bigger yet, the whole economy will grow and grow fast. People will be fixated on producing rather than fighting over this clown in the WH who is sucking all the air out of everyone. Forget him. Inequality will grow? Yes, but so what, so long as everyone else can have the food they want, free medicare and education, all the cool shows, games and concerts whose price will be affrdable. If this is happening - will it be a problem to have just .01% running the show? Heck give me the simpler, more fun comfortable life anytime and let the rich labor with all the big problems running their robots. Please tell me how I'm crazy here.an have the food they want, free medicare and education, all the cool shows, games and concerts whose price will be affrdable. If this is happening - will it be a problem to have just .01% running the show? Heck give me the simpler, more fun comfortable life anytime and let the rich labor with all the big problems running their robots. Please enlighten me if this strikes you as really naive.
