This is true! Even looking back now it's amazing how real it looks, even if it's only showing small parts of the model at a time. Seeing David Hasselhoff get dragged through the water at high speed for a behind the scenes shows some real dedication to the craft.

It all comes down to the talent behind it. CG can easily look dated based on the ability and resources of the studio and animators but the same can be said for practical effects like physical props and models. Both have their place and either can hold up if crafted by a talented hand or look terrible if done poorly. Think about how many of the old 70s & 80s movies and other various media that had super cheesey unrealistic looking props just because that was the way it happened to turn out. The really fake plastic looking Arnold from the original Terminator comes to mind.
