Hobson was just 29 when he recorded this beautiful aria - Ferrando was his first Mozart role - during The Australian Opera's Melbourne season in March 1990. Three months later he sang Rodolfo in the world premiere of AO's Baz Luhrmann production of La Bohème ... and the rest is Australian operatic history!

you know, I'm usually a fan of really BIG voices. But I have to say, I've become a very big David Hobson fan, his voice is just very pleasant to listen to, and I enjoy everything I hear him in. bravo david

Seen many versions of Cosi. This is definitely my favorite. There are better singers than this ensemble out there and some of them can act too But in Toto, comedy, pathos, drama, costumes, sets, tempo and of course voices, this is the version I come back to. If you haven’t watched the OA

DH was quite young here - 1992 or 3 if I remember correctly which would have put him only at about 32 - 33. What a wonderful aria and gorgeous man

No, THAT voice is no longer heard because it has matured into a warm, rich, rounded sound, more often heard in concert than opera for the past few years, due to Hobson (and many colleagues) being out of favour with the former OA administration. The exiles are now making welcome returns, with Hobson's first Melbourne OA gig in 3 years (as Eisenstein) at the State Theatre, in May. (FYI, his recent OA Candide, in Sydney, displayed a voice in great shape - as will shortly be heard on his latest CD.)

Well, no dount there is all kinds of politics with OA. There are singers out there working with some of the other companies who are phenomenal but don't get a look in with OA As for DH, I wish him well. All voices change over time, of course.

Very Mozartish. But he has to be careful, he has a timbre that is indicating a fragile voice. It's a bit too "open", something that often ends up in a shrill and pressed voice later in life.

He was just 29 years old when this was filmed. Because he's an haute contre (rather than lyric tenor) his voice matured into a warm and rounded sound and is still going strong in concerts.

@@mattyd3079 Hate to say this but almost agree, thinking Orphee was best suited and which I prefer to all others. I really did enjoy his humorous acting in Cosi- all in the eyes if you were close enough... .
