This is VERY interesting to watch. FASCINATING. A lot of stuff going on. You can see the very delicate alliance going on here. DLR between two brothers normally joined at the hip, as Sammy would say. One of my first reactions is; whoa! Eddie wants to talk! You watch him trying to get a word in edge-wise, but he's not just competing with DLR, but his brother too! Ed wants to talk, and yea, he NEVER used to open up or show ambition to speak in interviews in the past. This must be a benefit of his sobriety. I wonder if that has confered a difference in his attitude as he's frequently blamed for a comtemptable attitude. Alex wants to talk too. DLR, bless him, turns side to side to make sure they know he's smiling while his mouth races ahead. haha...i think this interview is a perfect display of ginger balance of humongous personalities. Which translates into explosive music.

Davey R Right on Davey R. Very interesting to watch the dynamics going on here. Reading the books on the band and watching some of the documentaries, I've learned to gain a new appreciation for the immense amount of hard work they they all put in to make a go of it. Of course they got screwed in the beginning, most unknowns do, but they did play as many gigs as they could muster up, including backyard bbq's, weddings and so on. Plus, lugging around all that gear, even though they soon enough had a road crew. But the beginning was a lot of hard work.

Maybe he forgot his Claritin on that sniffly, jittery, interview day. The use of "benefit of his sobriety", although in and of itself is neither an announcement of his current state of mind or his state of mind at THAT time... It is a loose one, indeed. I first saw Van Halen 8/15/79 Cleveland Music Hall on their 2nd tour, The "World Vacation Tour" as they named it. Our seats were as far from the band as possible hurting the visual...But nothing was stopping the auditory sensory perception. I had been listening to them since the very first time I played the debut album( wasn't everybody?) but the hard rock they delivered was over-the-top loud as fuck. I subsequently saw them on the next 6 tours, consecutively, and then a show in NC in the 90s and that was enough times for me. But the seats I had in 1982 were 2nd row, right in front of Eddie. I managed to sneak in my Kodak 110 camera and still have the best shots, as most were blurry beyond description. But it was at that show that my hearing was damaged permanently, and a battle-scar because of my need to play shit at 11. It's a shame the bridge with Mike was too severely damaged to allow him to be a part of this, I'm speculating. It's Michael Anthony's vocals that made them better musically. His bass plucking was average and to me sounded like keyboards, I never was a fan of the gear and sound he had. It was all the more magnified during his "solo"...I love bass guitar and really dig hearing a master of the instrument like Bootsy or Entwistle or Geddy or Stu or Wooten. Mike's bass guitar sound in contrast to his incredible vocal range was just ....not so good and was kinda just meh to me. Having said that, he is a vital and crucial part of Van Halen and his absence is a sad one, imho.

Dave rules. You get the vibe watching this that ALEX runs VH and that he has a serious ego insecurity with Dave. I find Dave to be a misunderstood genius and when Eddie and him have time to just talk they really vibe while Alex is bringing a sphincter factor of 9.9 ....

Alex always rubbed me the wrong way --- he seems very uppity and acts like he's smarter than anyone in the room --- on top of that he seems awfully bitter and angry for somebody who made a living beating stuff with sticks

Bill Belzek I mean I really don’t think he’s “trying” to act like the smartest guy in the room. Also, beating things with sticks and being good at it is in fact very hard to do. Honestly it’s harder to find a good drummer than guitarist.

Oh yeah Alex definitely calls the shots and his mind revolves around the money Eddie and Dave were the magic and Michael Anthony was the tinsel on the 🌲
@tinfoilhatter4 жыл бұрын
no way, man! alex was the musical genius of the group, full of all kinds of music theory and discipline and everything, eddie mentioned that in an old interview, decades ago, i seem to recall- alex was the brains of the whole operation, man! the brains, and the backbone of the whole apparatus! alex was always the man, man! make no mistake! he was the older brother, eddie and dave were the same age, two yrs younger than young alex, man! and they still are~

These guys were so important in my youth! The very first album actually it was an 8 track that I ever had was the fair warning LP was so mind blowing to my 7 yr old brain compared to the stuff on the radio like Kenny, Rogers, Kenny, Loggins, juice Newton, Hall & Oates type of music played on radio then. I am 49 years old now and I have kids six and eight and they are blown away by the sounds that that band produced I remember crying while giving my kids a bath when I heard of the passing of EVH, it was almost like, a long lost uncle had passed away, sure do miss him being around

How great would it be if Mike Anthony was here
@BigBass-xf5yi3 жыл бұрын
It would have been epically incredible. And also gut wrenching watching this post EVH. One of the good things that came out of Wolfe’s stint with VH was that he spent a lot of time with his pop. Fortunately, they have a great relationship. And it most likely, dramatically helped with Wolfs experience and development. Just listen to his “Mamoth” album. It’s fantastic. He wrote sang and played almost everything on the fine album. He is certainly help keeping good rock music alive.

1st song that I heard from VH was Dance the night away back in 1983 at 12 years of age and been a fan ever since. I wanted to be all of them!
