I grew up as a french horn player, but my passion was rock singing, which I did my fair share of through the early years. No internet, remember, but somewhere in the back of my head, I had the knowledge that there was a guy named Dave Amram who actually made his name as a jazz horn player. I went to Hartt College in Hartford CT/USA as a music education major/horn emphasis, and I kind of kept to myself since I commuted from home. One magical Friday in 1975, a few of the other horn players asked if I wanted to join them for a three hour trip to NYC to see Barry Tuckwell play horn at Carnegie Hall. Somehow, somebody also knew that a french horn player named Dave Amram was also going to play a few blocks away after the Tuckwell concert in a small nightclub. Coincidentially, I had just recently been reading his 1968 book, Vibrations, and I encouraged us all to be sure to attend both. We didn't get home until about 3:30am, but it was an amazing little trip! Both concerts were wonderful, but the time with David Amram was much more transformative. He was there with an amazing acoustic jazz guitarist (Asian American - forget his name) and they were a strange conglomeration of jazz, hopped up folk, and a totally unique improvisatory song formation that Dave would just spontaneously launch into form time to time. Needless to say, our world of horn playing possibilities were greatly increased that night. I'll never forget it! I wish I could say that this trip launched me on a horn playing journey into wild crazy jazz and improvisatory wordplay. Alas, there is only one Dave Amram. Mike Carbonneau had an unremarkable but wonderfully stable career in public school music education, semi professional folk singing, some good times as a horn player in musical theater pit orchestras, and a little jazz cornet improv. Yes! There is only one Dave Amram!
