When I lived on Woodlawn Drive I would see Dave Olney walk in front of my house once a day. It was always amazing to me. One day he knocked on the door. Turns out someone suggested he talk to my wife and I about working with him on an album design. Life is crazy.

This is so beautiful. I was sad to hear of David's passing from a friend. Listening to his songs tonight on the porch, so comforting. Rest in peace, David.

RIP David Olney. Found this while browsing for no real subject. Linda Ronstadt does a very lovely rendition of this song on her album "Feels Like Home". It is on KZbin also. I highly recommend people watch it to hear her cover, but the video of all the women is wonderful. The pictures fit the words. Beautiful song. Sadly, Linda Ronstadt's singing voice is silent now due to Parkinson's Disease, but her songs live on in recordings just as Mr. Olney's will.

Awe inspiring. In addition to being a wonderful song, this particular performance provides such a valuable insight into the artistic process that greats like David Olney use to create their magic for artists like Linda Ronstadt, who recorded this song.

Classic Olney, great song, great story behind the song, and wonderful presentation by the man with Sergio Webb doing his magic accompaniment. Enjoy. (BTW, I have a copy of "Zen Flesh, Zen Bones")

Oh, the women 'cross the river Carry water from the well at break of day They talk to one another God only knows what they might say You might get an education After years of dedication You might finally get a glimpse Of what is right and what is wrong But the women 'cross the river They knew that all along Oh, the women 'cross the river Work with tools that are ancient and handmade They plow their fields in perfect rows and then They rest beneath the shade Now we have learned to build Out of concrete out of steel And our buildings last a thousand years But then even they are bound to fall But the women 'cross the river Never learned to build a wall Oh, the women 'cross the river Are as gentle as the dew upon the ground How I love to hear them laughing in the rain When it makes that perfect sound Now a soldier with a gun and a battle to be won Might kill you with a bullet And you'd never even know the reasqon why But the women 'cross the river They can kill you with their eyes The women 'cross the river They can kill you with their eyes

This instantly became one of my favorite songs. David writes some great ones. I first heard of him, in the late 80's, in Nashville. If you want to read the book he refers to, here is a link: terebess.hu/zen/101ZenStones.pdf
