David has a world class voice that comes along very rarely. Wes is an awesome tenor I love his crystal clear voice and his heart and spirit. They are both fun to listen to but David has always sang at a level I’ve never heard before, not just range and power but the conviction in how he communicates the song. Again, Wes is fantastic but I don’t get chills when he sings like I do when David sings.

Disagree. To pit one against the other and ask for votes, basically, is something I believe should never be done. It brings the temptation of pride to the one lauded and discouragement to the other. It goes against the unity of spirit and love that ought to be ever evident in the lives and words of God's children. They are both gifted by their wonderful Creator with exactly the sound that He delights in and blesses hearts. May God continue to use them both mightily as they sing the gospel. And may He bless them in their lives as husbands and fathers and just the ways they most need. Thank you, Lord, for their lives and the blessing they have been to me.

David Phelps, of course. Even Wes admitted that. He told his wife, "I can't do what David does". Also David's ability in delivering a song is so majestic it can capture everybody's heart. And that's ministry. But Wes is still an amazing singer, in my opinion. He got good range and a clear voice. I look up to him in my singing life. David is just in a different level.

When Wes told his wife I can't do what David can he was a 26 year old kid going to his first audition with the GVB. She told him to let Bill decide that. While I think David is the more athletic tenor Wes is the more soulful. They both are gifted and a delight to hear.

I think that David is much more dramatic in his singing and for me that adds so much to his delivery. Wes Hapton is a wonderful singer but he is like me and much less active. That is why I only buy DVDs of David so that I can see his emotions as much as the audio.

Both are wildly trained and vocally mature. It's a hard song to sing in this key. Brutal actually. David just has a heavier timbre that let's him sound HUGE in that area of his voice. Wes has the same range but he simply has smaller cords than David. I'd say technique wise they are neck and neck, but since Phelps has a more dramatic/lyric tenor voice he gets more love

They are two gifted Godly men that God has given them a talent to use! It is not right to say one is better than the other. They are both put where they were called and when they were called by God. I Love both of them and they both are unique individual designed by God. It’s just like when Ronnie Booth left the Booth Brothers and Buddy Mullins fulfilled that void because God called him there! They are both wonderful singers and you should never say one is better than the other. In Gods eyes they were both gifted with the talent and use it to Glorify God. Buddy is Buddy, Ronnie is Ronnie, David is David and Wes is Wes! Their goal is to glorify God help bring others to Christ not to be judged against each other. God knitted them in their mothers womb just like He did each of us. To use our talents to Glorify Him and Him only! Wes and David both are Godly men who love the Lord and want to glorify Him with all their hearts and souls, and be used by God however He chooses! Same with Ronnie and Buddy! They are their own individual not to be compared with each other!

I think they are both very excellent singers! I have met both in person and heard both of them sing live in person, and they are truly both amazing!! What a gift and what a talent they both have, and have shared through the years to the world. Even though I think they both have separate special styles and techniques for singing for sure, they both have very unique vocal qualities that are each equal in their own ways. David is definitely a powerhouse vocalist and Wes, with his tender notes, but what pure notes they are, and there’s power in that all in itself! Both very, very amazing and talented men!!

The differences can be highlighted, but I think God made them different for a reason. His (God's) mercies are new every morning for the same reason. So praise God not for this or that voice but whenever a person, big voice or small, young, middle-age or old is praising Him with their whole being. Worship is so much more spiritually natural when the Spirit, using pure-hearted servants is doing the leading. Maranatha, Lord Jesus - can't wait to see you FOREVER!!

I met Wes Hampton at a Church of the Nazarene District Assembly, where he was the special singer, and I was totally blown away by the purity of his voice. He was very humble when I told him GOD blessed him with an incredible talent and I was very glad he was using it to praise GOD. That being said David Phelps has an incredible voice too. I have seen him in person but have not met him. Both are fabulous tenors!!!!

I've listened to this back to back days. I love whoever put this together. I stand by what I said on my last comment on this post. Tonight I closed my eyes the entire time. Phelpsy is simply better. Yeah…agreed. Phelps has complete and total control in that upper register. Wes is great but he sounds flatter and a bit strained (not flatter as in flat/sharp…just not as “full”).

As others have already said both are great singers and bring glory to God, and while both can hit the high notes, when you compare the timbre of their voices and the ability to provide a controlled quaver at high notes, David leaves everyone standing, including such a great tenor as Luciano Pavarotti. He is, in my opinion, a once off, a gift to the Christian church. I also believe that David, along with Guy Penrod, are the best at interpreting a song and carrying it over to an audience with their facial and body expressiveness. But lastly, we the church are truly blessed to have listened to all of the Gaither singers over the years bring glory to to Almighty God and our Lord Jesus Christ.
