David Pullins: "Manet's Lost Years"

David Pullins, Associate Curator, The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Research undertaken in preparation for Manet: Three Paintings from the Norton Simon Museum prompted a reevaluation of the painter’s development between 1875 and 1877, a period of intense stylistic transition in his artistic trajectory. Focusing on new discoveries made about Madame Manet and The Ragpicker, works featured in the exhibition, this lecture addresses some of the surprising directions that Manet took during this time.

I enjoyed this lecture, thank you! He’s one of my favorite painters so I’ve read and viewed a lot about him. Appreciated the side-by-sides and some new insights. The phrase ‘attempting to solve pictorial problems’ often springs to mind with him. That fish is stunning :) he did excel at still lifes!

David.. you make it sound like Morisot was shocked at Manet tinkering with her painting like a mad man... this was not the case.. she actually expressed admiration for his natural ability to far surpass her concepts with a few deft brush strokes. She felt that she could never hope to reach his level of taste and natural genius.
