I really like how Roberts captures the light and its effects.

Magnificent and evocative. Something of Piranesi greatness and the Romantic atmosphere gives Roberts paintings an everlasting interest. Spain, Italy, France, Egypt, Britain, Holy Land...A haunting trip.

Recently discovered David Roberts by buying some fantastic prints of his holyland collection, in a flee market in amsterdam. Got home to london and framed them. They look absolutley amazing. Started doing some research. Amazingly talented, hard working and prolific Yet very few people have heard of him. Now i am totally hooked

Saracen: I have the book Egypt Yesterday and Today by David Roberts. Hardcover, with an amazing set of images, dated 9/24/1838 to 11/24/1839. Published in US by Stewart Tabori and Chang. Cover is the Collosi of Rameses II at Abu Simbel. Many of his drawings and paintings are accompanied by photos to show the actual subject! It's definitely worth reading. My oldest cousin on my mother's side was an Archeologist and Palentologist who spent almost a year working with the UN along with many others to cut it into huge stone blocks and reassemble the entire Abu Simbel structure involved in the 1966 to 1968 effort to relocate it to higher ground before it was drowned by the Aswan High Dam. That's quite a story in it's own right!!! Considered the most impressive for archeological protection in history.

Its surprising how much more color there is to the egyptian temple columns and roofs in the 1830s compared to today, just 200 years later .19:57
