And yet he did one of the cheapest moves in NBA history. Running up your own score sheet in a meaningless game to win a scoring title? Cheap, through and through.
@mrjones4226 жыл бұрын
Cheapest moves!? Lol, You can clearly see that was double teamed late in the game. It's not like the other team didn't try. Plus he shot 63% for the game and you can see his buckets in the video. More than half were jump shots. He was even passing to open guys late in the game when double teamed. That was just a man that wanted to get as much as he could. You don't think Wilt played like Robinson did in this game every single night the year he averaged over 50 PPG? Plus Kobe's 81 point game he stayed to see if he could crack 80. GTFO with this being a cheap move! Shaq was just pissed that Robinson could actually pull it off.

It's funny, back then Robinson was criticized for being a jumpshooter, nowadays he'd get nothing but praise for that sweet face-up game of his. The game has changed, but Robinson would be an MVP and DPoY in any era.
@ralx225b9 жыл бұрын
a5anda6 Exactly
@killaram6138 жыл бұрын
+a5anda6 I always found this funny. In every industry people advance, except in basketball, where old heads always think their generation was better. Nah bro, he wouldn't score 71 in this era. It's a completely different game these days, better perimeter defenders, and if you're not a three point threat these days, it's hard to argue you're a great. Every team is looking for those stretch 4s and 5s these days, precisely because the midrange game doesn't work any more.
@a5anda68 жыл бұрын
+killaram613 Never said would score 71 today, never said he would not. I said he would be a beast at both ends. Your argument that better perimeter defenders would limit him? Ha ha. But that was the Sterling-Clippers he was playing against.. news flash: not every team is good defensively. He was much better than Love or Bosh anyday. Wilt, Kareem, Hakeem, or Shaq... A big man who scores at will opens up the floor for his teammates. And anyway, prototypical stretch big Dirk won MVP and he scores mostly from mid-range. LBJ isnt much of a three point shooter, while Durant has never won a title. Nash a 2x MVP was a great shooter but never got a Finals MVP, while Tony Parker did so without shooting 3s. Anyway, Robinson shoots so well, he could add the long ball if there was a need for it... heck even Duncan with his flat shot has made some big time threes on occasion.
@killaram6138 жыл бұрын
+a5anda6 Dude shot 25 threes in his whole career. That would put him on pace to be a middle of the road center in todays game. That's why it's too hard to judge different players across different eras. Also, Dirk vs Robinson argument is a very stupid one, because Dirk is a way better shooter. Tony parker has scored over 450 threes in his career as well. Shaq is the only one that is different, but even then I would take Shaq 10 times out of 10, because physically he was dominant, he could bully himself into the lane. What I'm saying is, I believe in every industry people get better over time, because the level of competition is raised (many factors for this, more participation, trying to one up players already in the league) but yet I always hear old heads in Basketball saying a player from a different era would be a monster today. Why is that? Why do you think in different industries people advance except in Basketball where they somehow get worse? Damn, even looking at kids doing post-secondary education these days, every Joe and their dog has a bachelors degree now, so on average more and more people are getting their masters to differentiate themselves and beat the competition, so overall in the work force we advance over time. But yet, in basketball, we don't.
@a5anda68 жыл бұрын
+killaram613 You seem out to prove that you have to shoot 3s to be a great player in today's NBA. Shooting from distance is important, but its not everything. Like scoring a high percentage in the paint ain't important... wha? Add to that, Robinson was a 7'1" FREAK athlete with a pretty faceup jumper, rebounds like a boss, and defends at an elite level. You want a pick&roll/pick&pop gold? Robinson would shine in an offense like that. His game is better suited to today than the 90s. He'd also be a DPOY candidate in the current era (which is laking great centers, btw). If you are correct, and you "have" to hit threes, Robinson looks fully capable of extending his range (this isn't Dwight Howard or DeAndre Jordon we are talking about). But even without the three, he'd still light it up and draw double teams and get open looks for shooters around him. You watch him glide up and down the floor at that size, and with his skills... you are blind if you don't see a crazy talent. Wilt, Shaq, and Kareeem would also be unstoppable today. People wouldn't be talking abut the death of the 5 spot, and Robinson could easily run with the smalls no problem (he's no Timofy Mosgov). Yes, those big cats would need a team around them, just like Durant, Curry or Dirk or Anthony Davis do. But though some young bigs are coming up, it's been a weak era for centers since Tim Duncan has gotten old and Shaq faded. The best defenders lack skill. Pau Gasol and Dirk are nice offensively, but not much defensively. (Robsinson was a better all around player than Dirk, no contest. Though Dirk is a HOFer.) Marc Gasol is good, but not truly great. DMC is not a leader. It's a weak era for bigs, that's all. That doesn't mean that Dirk, or Draymond Green is a better player than Hakeem. Get a grip, man. That said, I do agree that generally speaking, the league and players evolve. More good three point shooters today. But less diversity of skills due to rule changes. Team defense is better, but man defense has seriously declined. But none of that has anything to do with the fact that rare athletes from the past weren't so rare that they don't exist in every era. It's obvious that they don't. Rare talents are rare talents. If you want the ultimate league, you'd cherry pick from this era and others. I'd take Steph Curry at the one. Someone else might take Oscar Robison and that could be a problem, but I'd still take Steph. But at the big man spots, I would not take Spencer Hawes, I can tell you that. And I would not take Tyson Chandler if I had a choice. Drop prime Wilt Chamberlain in today's game, and the man would be a wrecking crew. I'm high on Anthony Davis, but we still have to wait and see how it all comes together for him. And people don't advance in every industry. In basketball, they are better in many respects, worse in others, but on average they are better due to more overall competition and a more established industry to steer them along from childhood through the pros. And now we have more film which helps. And yet, youth leagues don't teach skill and the game like they used to (which is why European players are often better prepared these days). By the same token, I can't buy machinery that lasts anymore. Things are built so cheaply. That's not progress, it's economics. Similarly, the abundance of Bachelors degrees is due to grade inflation and the higher education racket that's due for a reform and is an example of a system that has not improved and produces less value on average. K-12 education was better in previous eras (despite fewer people staying in school), where math, grammar, critical thinking were accountable to a higher basic standard. There are no carte blanche simplistic answers like it was better before, or it is better now. There are always exceptions, and they exist in sports as well.

Spurs really denied David. They were never a system that would allow 1 player to dominate. They always moved the ball. David hardly ever shot over 25 shots a game. Other programs like Houston, would allow Hakeem to shoot over 20 shots a game the majority of his career and Hakeem had a lower FG% than David. David's 40 and 50 point games averaged over 50%. Hakeems 40, 50 pt games averaged 46% shooting. If David was in a program that would allow him to shoot 20 plus a game every night, he could've been the most dominant player of his era outside of MJ. Too bad that is not San Antonios game. They have always preferred to move the ball.

Well, I just heard about it back then. Some says that this last game was well-organized for Robinson to win the scoring title in '94. He dropped 71, Shaq scored 32 so at the end of the day Robinson got his scoring crown. The race between them for the title was pretty sharp so the fact that Robinson scored THAT much in his last game of the season was strange (and a lil' bit suspicious) for some people. That's why some said that it was ruined from Shaq. I don't think so, Robinson was unstoppable.

If you really watching the clippers took out they starting 5 early in the 3rd so that Robinson can get his 71

@duuceduuce7118 Now, why would an opposing team do that? Please make it make sense. I guess they must love the greatness of Robinson right?

One of the most under rated players ever. I remember watching this live at my grandmothers house as a 10yr old.

I've totally forgotten all about Dennis Rodman playing for the Spurs, I seem to remember him more when he played for the Bulls

Shaq can be as mad as he wants at david robinsons best Shaq could tie his shoes. Robinson did it with skill shaq did it with a big ass like barkley and rick mahorn. Besides look at the admirals total stats on the game he didn't just score.

How does Rick Mahorn make this discussion? He was just a glorified goon on a front line full of goons who won by kicking everybody's asses.

Dan Conway Barkley developed his game...he was not one dimensional like shaq.

At the time, nobody had a 70 point game in 16 years. David Thompson being the most recent in 1978. Nobody in this era had done anything like this making it extra special. Well, nobody besides MJ who scored 69 pts in 1990, however David's 71 was still on more efficient scoring than Jordan's 69.

1) numbers don't lie, Robinson (21 pts, 11 reb, 3 blocks for career) dominates both players. 2) david robinson had a better mid range shot and post game than both players. 3)david robinson is a hall of famer, neither bosh or millsap amount to such accomplishment, I don't care if their careers aren't done yet

I actually remember SportsCenter from the day of this game April 24, 1994... Robinson went for 71 so Shaq needed 100 to win the scoring title, he only went for 38.
