The thing I find interesting is that in 1840 the treaty was signed between the crown (being the British Empire) and Maori - but later the British Empire dissolved, and it was replaced by the NZ government. And the NZ government is there to represent us, as we elected them. So it makes sense that any changes to the way NZ operates has to be mandated by the people, and that the people be given a chance to make a submission.

Except that we have still not become a republic. We are still a dominion with the Crown as head of state. Which means the Crown still rules NZ and the Maori chiefs still have a Treaty with the Crown. The Bill implies that the treaty has been UPHELD this whole time when successive GOVT have clarified a long time ago the land reforms at the end of the 18th century and systemic racism of Māori stemming well into the 19th century was Severely mis handled. This has come along way though and I respect where NZ and it’s people have gotten to but this is in part the reason for all the “handouts”. Im not against equality but myself and alot of Māori that I’m related to and know Don’t understand all this privilege that we get, I have to wait at A&E for 4hrs like everyone else, all people from NZ are entitled to the benefit not just Māori, I was decent at sport but there weren’t no Māori scholarships for anybody I knew, is there a small percentage of Māori that are getting all this while the rest of us just live like everyone else? Quite a history about the Maori - put the Inca's or the Aztecs to shame in degeneration. Outcast from the Cook Islands during the 13th century as weaker primitive Neolithic people by later waves of Polynesians (Maori were from the original wave of primitive Polynesians pushed right out across the Eastern Pacific by successive stronger more advanced groups arriving from the west). They were outcast on rafts and some floated to the North East Coast of NZ driven by the South Equatorial Current and were stranded for 500 years. The weaker were pushed down to the South Island or Chathams etc. So the South Island Maori (had their own language) were the weakest of the weak. They were captured and eaten as 'Slave flesh' by the northern Maori doing raids. (Well they all ate each other - 80% of Maori pre European were dark skinned easily fattened slaves farmed and eaten by a lighter skinned 'Ariki' thin wiry elite royal caste). So it was with some righteousness as well as British cunning that they armed the southern Maori who then with muskets launched a genocidal war on the north.. That plus measles & flu halved the Maori population and removed most of the elite. The British then liberated the slaves and outlawed cannibalism. The northern Maori fought with the British against the south bad west Maori 'rebels'. The Maori sued for peace and a treaty was signed that removed all sovereignty and made them subjects to the English crown where the English would protect them from each other. Land could only be sold to or via the Crown. Maori could live on their reservations with native custom but none did. The treaty of Waitangi is strikingly clear in that the Maori cede sovereignty completely and become citizens of Great Britain - all 3 clauses lock that in. Nothing in today's 'Maori' culture is authentic. The music - all European (Maoris did not have tonal music, the songs are missionary tunes or introduced - Poi dance is from Islands and Stick dance from old Malaya. The carvings and art - all European - Arabesques that was the fashion at the time. Original Maori had limited dash carving and no painting of objects. No written language - all the syntax & grammar plus vowel inflection is European. No technology - some lagoon canoes and wood or stone Neolithic tools. No food sources - like pigs or crops - they left that all behind, all they had was a weak inbred fox (now extinct), some rats and a weak dismal pacific yam. They ate out all the bird-life including 10 species of Moa and 46 other bird species, didn't know how to farm the sea as were island people and so they turned to societal cannibalism. Today - no full blood or half blood left. No genuine tradition and almost all are offspring of Maori slave females sold to white settlers for muskets or food. -So more fake than the 'Sioux' or 'Cherokee' or 'Crow' who had at least retained some genuineness about who they were and their history. -Everything you 'saw or experienced' is fake. A totally convected disneyfied tokenistic set of inventions fueled by a grievance culture of mixed-race imposters fetishing a false past bad history because it pays benefits. Although Moriori outnumbered them almost two to one, they chose to obey Nunuku’s Law and did not fight back. Approximately 300 were killed, and the rest were enslaved. The tribe was in danger of being destroyed completely. Following several Moriori petitions, the New Zealand government finally stepped in after 28 years. Let's take a New Zealander alive today, who happens to be highly wealthy and successful and who's ancestry is 50% Chinese, 25% European and 25% Maori. Which side of the Treaty is this person on exactly? Oppressed, oppressor or neither? Is it right and fair that this person and their kids are currently entitled to claim special privileges and entitlements over the rest of us? e.g. race based scholarships, easier access to Uni courses, preferential and discounted access to public medical services, unelected seats on local government, seperate voting rights, dedicated seats in parliament, etc. Or should all of us as New Zealanders be entitled to the same equal set of rights and responsibilities instead? Would it be so bad if government spending, policy and laws were directed based on need, not on ancestry or self identified race? If we took this approach, then wouldn't groups most in need still get most of the help anyway, just without being racist about it?

Obviously the opposition to the Act Bill is motivated principally by fear, and fear can have multiple causes. Seymour is doing a good job in alleviating some of that. I suspect the intensity of fear will diminish fairly quickly. Seymour might find someone to steel-man the opposition argument, as this might add context and realism which is often easier to deal with, than the "Sky is falling" arguments, which are commonly repeated. The accusation the Seymour is "rewriting the Treaty" is pure projection. That is what they have been doing for 50 years. I am still undecided as whether the bill as written is better or worse than the "no principles" argument. I like the Act Bill in part because I am a lifetime republican, and think the Bill solves some problems in that area. I am already sure delay in the hope of unity would be a mistake. Support is building.

However, what are Maori leaders and elders doing to reduce health issues with Health problems (Smoking and poor diet levels remain high), child mortality, and education/truancy? Maoris are overrepresented in all these areas, and there is very little public noise coming from Maori leaders to address this. Seriously, New Zealand need a Treaty bill discussion? especially when half the country is struggling with employment and other critical issues. The divide-and-rule approach is no surprise. Why are we not addressing rising youth crime? Why are we not focusing on bringing more businesses to New Zealand? Why are we not ensuring our nurses and doctors are paid well so they don’t leave for Australia, ensuring everyone has access to quality healthcare? Why are we ignoring the issue of Christian pedophilia and child trafficking in New Zealand? Why aren’t we talking about the public sector laying off workers, which is putting immense stress on our economy as more people are forced onto welfare? It’s baffling that our leaders seem focused on division instead of solving real issues. I’m not Māori; I’m Jewish, and I know what Nazi Germany did to the Jews. This is how it starts-using the name of equality to scapegoat a community. This isn’t leadership. Seymour, you should be addressing the real issues New Zealanders are suffering from. What has the Treaty discussion achieved so far? It has led to massive protests, with half of New Zealanders taking time off work. Does that not cause financial loss to the country and add to mental stress? Give me a break, this isn’t equality; it’s triggering people because the government has nothing better to do.
