I have seen so many people refer to Tooth and Claw as the episode David Tennant used his native Scottish accent. It's not! Here are some clips from the episode and other interviews and Comic Relief Scetches that show his real accent!

Not sure what happened the beginning was supposed to read: "In Doctor Who's Tooth and Claw The Doctor uses a Scottish accent, but is it David Tennant's natural accent? Listen"

What an incredible job he did in tooth and claw to sound like some posh guy pretending to have a Scottish accent 😂

It’s important to remember for non Scots that Scottish people have two Scottish accents, we speak scots with a Scottish accent ,English with a strong Scottish accent when speaking to other Scot’s and we speak English with a Scottish accent, more anglicised when speaking to other nationalities.

The accent in Tooth and Claw was more Highland than David's own Paisley accent.

His accent is so flexible and has changed towards posh over the years! It’s so amazing that he could deliver the lines in different accents but keep the authenticity and the energy in them. I watched him talking with his fellow Scotsmen and his accent got thicker and thicker as the interview went on, but like ten years ago he became much more posh (he’s kinda back to a bit Scottish now for some reasons). A friend of mine even did their linguistics paper on the change of his accent hanah

It's so hard to explain to people but Scottish people who travel and need to be understood elsewhere have a selection of accents that they subconsciously slip between. I'm married to an Aberdonian lorry driver. In an average working day he goes between his home account (mostly his natural accent but smoothed a little), broad Doric accent at work, his BBC scottish accent (slight twag but clear) and BBC English for those who are rude enough to complain they don't understand anything he says. That's completely normal and often so subconscious that they slide between mid sentence.

It's a stereotypical Scottish accent. It's what people (not from Scotland) expect to hear from a Scottish person. I've seen Irish actors play Irish characters on American telly and they all sound like they're from Cork. That high pitched kind of sing songy type of voice that sounds like the lucky charms leprechaun. Even if the character is from Finglas in North Dublin, you're still going to get that accent.

Not being British, I didn't get a lot of it. True confessions: I didn't realize DT was speaking with an American accent in Bad Samaritan until I watched it a second time. That is what, in my view makes him exceptional bc he feels authentic no matter what he says or what accent he uses. However, there was a pilot he made in which he employed an American and for me it stripped away his uniqueness. It may have just been a bad script and it never got made.

He does a reading of Good Omens, and it's so strange, he starts off with a Scottish accent and it morphs into a British one, I couldn't wrap my head around what was so strange with the recording when I first listened to it! (I'm not a native speaker but have been living in the UK for a while).

Adorable in any language but his Scottish accent is a large part of David Tennant's charm. 😊

As said i have a brother who has now been in London for 30 years his scottish accent has changed over the years , and he us not an actor when he comes "home" he sounds scottish. David Tennants skill is the animation he puts into a role

Naturally, everyone adapts how they speak a bit to the people around them, so the accent DT has in interviews or talking to other non-scottish people will be more RP than his natural accent.

Tooth and Claw was the only time David’s Doctor got to be Scottish (apart from the Catherine Tate skit). 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿😢

I can hardly hear any difference besides that I think he sounds more Scottish in Tooth and Claw, like a thicker accent? But then I'm not a native English speaker and I admit I'm not good with any British accents. It might not have been his natural accent (but a Scottish accent nonetheless) but I just feel he made it thicker, it reminded me of how he sounded in his very early works. I feel like he did this in Broadchurch as well, or am I totally imagining things lol. I do believe his accent has changed over the years though (I mean he's lived in London for 30 years), bc he sounds different now compared to, for example, in Dramarama; I could barely understand him there haha.
