SHOULD I RUN A CHEAP, JUNKYARD 4.8L OR 5.3L LS? WHICH STOCK LS MAKES MORE POWER? IS BIGGER REALLY BETTER? WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ADD A CAM UPGRADE TO EACH ONE? WHICH JUNKYARD COMBO IS BEST FOR BOOST? DOES LOW-SPEED TORQUE IMPROVE BOOST RESPONSE? CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO WHERE I COMPARED A STOCK 4.8L TO THE LARGER 5.3L IN STOCK TRIM. I THEN COMPARED EACH AFTER ADDING A TRUCK NORRIS NSR CAM TO EACH. HOW DO THE POWER CURVES FOR EACH COMPARE IN STOCK TRIM? HOW DO THEY COMPARE AFTER ADDING THE CAMS? CHECK IT OUT-IT'S ALL HERE!

Here's the thing about the 4.8 that most people don't realize..... They are cheap to race and replace. I helped a friend set up a Camaro for drag, with a little 4.8 and a big turbo(s475 I think). We have 4 engines in the garage for only $500 total, and one for free with valvetrain noise. Blow an engine, swap everything over(like cam and springs), and he's running the next day. Near me, the 4.8 usually gets $150-300, a 5.3 gets $400-600, and a 6.0 is $800+. That's a big price difference if you're just looking to have fun, but if it's meant to last then it's worth it for the torque.

I love my little 4.9 (3.810 bore, stock 3.267 stroke). Works really well with ported cathedral heads, TBSS intake, 92mm TB, and some quality tri-y headers. Not overly powerful, not too quick. Creates the same style of fun of old civics, but just a bit more than that.

As many engines that I pull from pull a part for 300 bucks I have only acquired three 6 liters. One lq9 from an 02 Escalade and two Lq4’s from Denalis. I only get 5.3 motors because they are easier to sell. It’s a bolt in upgrade for the 4.8 guys and I advertise that. Quick tip. Most of those trucks are in there for bad transmissions but I only buy motors from crashed trucks. It was running when it crashed. Worst case is low oil pressure. The driver side head will always look dirty when you take off the valve covers but you can tell if it has been taken care off.

Got a wild Idea. Have done some research and hot rod magazine did an article titled the 350 chevy should have built. Its a 400 small block with a 327 crank. Get this the 4.8l ls has a factory stroke of 3.26 inches. The ls7 has a factory bore of 4.125. So a destroked big bore. The 377 inch small block which is a 400 with a 350 crank was a circle track monster. But the 327 crank was better with afr heads. Had diesel like torque on 85 octane actually. Well over 400 foot pounds through the entire rev range

It's basically an lm7, but aluminum with 4.8 pistons, 243 heads, and a slightly different cam. If you want to build it up, an lm4 might be cheaper to find. It's still aluminum, but the same as an lm7 in every other way..... Either way, anything in these tests for a 5.3 applies.
@Warloch1
@Warloch1 Жыл бұрын
@@doc221978 Except that the LM4 has dished pistons, a cam with less lift and duration, pressed pins versus floating, front sump instead of a rear sump but other than that... Well, they both have an aluminum block and 5.3l of displacement.
@doc221978
@doc221978 Жыл бұрын
@@Warloch1 @Warloch1 you're probably right about the sump, I've never built an l33. I did say if it's to build up though, and that it's an aluminum version of the lm7. I also listed the cam, pistons(same PN as a 4.8), and heads. Almost every l33 I find is at least $1,200, and an lm4 is about $600. Depending on his goals, it could be a viable option. As for gen 3/gen 4 internals, at the power most people push it's negligible. It's coming into play at well over 1k hp. Also, around 04 or 05, the lm7 and LS motors in general received the gen 4 internals..... And I would replace the rod bolts on either. I have a few stories about that. Now I'm going to look up the l33 oil pan and sump. I don't remember the block being different, but I'm not sure.

Can you test a 408/416 4" stroker with stock ls3/l92/square port heads and intake versus a stock displace 6.0/6.2 with aftermarket heads? Both combos with a similar camshaft? My guess is that the 408 with the stock square port heads and intake will make more power than a stock displacement 6.0 with aftermarket heads but I can't prove that. @@richardholdener1727 of course.. what was I thinking, there’s the answer 7HP . Now the question is, is it worth spending the extra coin on springs and pushrods for 7 hp for a street machine. I’d say yes if the engine has high mileage. 😎

smaller car smaller engine bigger car bigger engine bigger engine more torque more burnouts smaller engine less torque less wheelspin notice how both engine's with same cam upgrade, the torque curve falls off in a straight line at the same rate, like 2 railroad tracks. more displacement moves the torque curve up and to the left more camshaft moves the torque curve up and to the right boost moves the torque curve UP!
