It's also worth mentioning how the Decathlon budget brand bike, the 'Rockrider', got 2nd in the men's elite XCO. It also featured budget TRP brakes, albeit in a different colour way. Impressive.

Mountain biker here that wanted to get into gravel for the shoulder seasons here in CO, USA. Started watching your channel because you spoke my language: get a real ride not a race bike. Love that you advocate for 1X and have shown that gravel bikes can do it all! In fact, bought a Giant Revolt A1 with SRAM XPLR based on your recommendations (I'll be riding the Double Bypass gran fondo on it this July). THX, David!

@@asquare9316 eMTB is the way forward especially for us old folks. You can still ride to power by attaching your bike computer to it. You just keep it in Trail mode even on the steeps so you can still get a great work out. But most importantly, I can do way more climbs and descents per session than if I were riding an analog MTB. I have been riding the Levo and love it but I find where I ride, I almost never use Turbo mode so I will trade in for the Levo SL. I try to get in at least 1000m vertical per session and the SLs have more than sufficient power and reviewers say at 17kg, it rides almost like an analog MTB. So they say... All I know is, the fun factor is off the charts.

I think the Epic series has really helped push cross over in the sport as well. Looking at the podiums (woman’s too) should show why Pinarello finally got in the game. I kinda see the point of the Epic WC. There are few courses of UCI level races, where a hardtail would be marginally faster than a full-sus. This bike being lighter closes that gap even more - on courses like Albstadt (most popular World Cup course for the choice of a HT) this bike with zero sag would climb pretty much like a hardtail with just a tiny weight penalty, but would be then, if not necessarily faster, at least more confidence inspiring in the descends. It's a bike made for the factory racing team, so price increase over a hardtail is not an issue. I imagine it also simplifies the choice of bike for a World Cup in terms of XCC, which is barely technical and an efficient hardtail would be quite an obvious choice, however, you must start in both XCC and XCO on the same frameset. Again, this bike being in efficiency terms almost a hardtail when suspension locked out and with design allowing to do that without risk of damage makes it very reasonable way. In this XCC and XCO same bike regard is the Cervélo LinkLock also an interesting concept, but it's clearly more fiddly to replace a link and a shock with a ridgid piece than to just turn a nob to turn a full suspension bike into a hardtail.

The reason is very simple: the same reason why BMW, Audi, Porsche VW etc and even Bently make 4x4s. It’s another massive market segment to be exploited if you already have a high cache brand name. It’s easier to enter this segment than try to gain small incremental sales volume increases in the existing segments. It’s been done already in the “Gravel” area as well as City, Cross blah blah blah you name it … just wait for the Marketers to invent and exploit a new segment.

Long time MTB racer here, MTB has certainly changed a lot here in NZ, when I started racing in the early 90's our typical races (of which there were many all year round) were one big loop in often terrible conditions, mud, tree roots, mostly single trail with gravel connecting trails, races for the majority were over 3 hours long but the front of the field finished about 2 hours 45mins, probably a little long I thought as recovery was often incomplete before the next weekends race. Oh and we were on rigid bikes with rim brakes, I really liked the performance of the Marin Chromoly forks, then suspension forks started to appear mid to late 90's, disc brakes appeared late 90's. Then wise heads decided that we needed to start doing multi loop races to appeal to spectators, I never really enjoyed going round and round the same loops 6x and moved onto other things. MTB racing seemed to also fade away in numbers and then events from there and now adays there is the occasional schools race and the occasional race for adults but nothing regular and no where near the numbers of races, riders or interest that there was in the 90's, if races were the same format as back then I would still be racing MTB.

So it’s becoming popular now because it’s in a good place - it has been like that for sometime thanks to Redbull MVP and Pidcock have been on the MTB scene for a few years - now thanks to Redbull and to the multi discipline riders it’s now “popular” UCI sells it to discovery so it can charge a subscription fee to watch the main event - well done for spoiling a good thing - knowing that the cost for the teams had increased to run a season I hope (but doubt it) the money Is given to those teams

Yes and no. Yes, they are racing full out. But also, there is hardly any tactics. And that's what makes road racing interesting. It's not necessarily the strongest rider that wins. I actually find XC racing rather boring to look at. You're just waiting to see who turns out to be the strongest and who cracks firs or makes a mistake or has a flat tyre. Not saying that road racing can't be boring..

I believe SR Suntour electronic suspension and adjustable rear shock top mount are the most important features on the Pinarello MTB as they allow significant adjustability in suspension dynamics, travel and geometry of the bike. Pinarello clearly view this as being most important, as perhaps surprisingly, the transmission remains cable operated.

@David Arthur... What is the point of the linkage on an XC bike? Does the linkage improve lateral and torsional rigidity to the frame? Does the linkage add pedaling platform to counter act suspension bob or maybe all the linkage does is just hold up the rear shock? If you could contrast the difference in what the linkage is actually doing on the Pinarello and the Cervélo that would be great.
@snigs5T5
@snigs5T5 Жыл бұрын
Linkage controls suspension rate and does provide additional stiffness. The linkage can be tuned to provide more progressivity (bottom out resistance) and mid-stroke support. The type of suspension seen on XC bikes typically does not provide a great deal of anti-squat (resistance to forces that cause pedal bob), but the shock can be tuned with some low speed compression to counteract this. For an XC bike, this is usually not a problem, as efficiency is prized over compliance, meaning closer to hardtail is ok.

I am not sure why ANY brand makes a pure XC bike. XC mtb-ing has been dead for years now. Sure, there are a few xc races sprinkled here and there. (And I'm not even counting the 'pro' xc racing that no one cares about). Seems like the only readily available events are marathon style events like the Cascade Creampuff, Leadville, or True Grit (etc). Which are 99.9% done by 'average joes' out for a good time. Much better served by downcountry (ugh, bitter taste, BITTER TASTE with those words) style bikes. - True xc race weapons are built to abuse your body. Enduro bikes aren't meant to be peddled. Downcounty (blech term) is truly what mountain biking is all about. A reasonably lightweight, reasonably capable go-anywhere fun bike to ride..
