Hi David, I don't have a mandolin yet, but I have a friend who is sending me one. So im watching your beginners videos so I'm ready to play it when it gets here. Luckily I have played the guitar for about 20 years and I've played other stringed instruments. Thank you for the videos

David, You are the Best Instructor I have found - and I vetted a lot. My, main, instrument is my voice ( inherited from my mum - who is a SAG vocal performer). I have a rare Autoimmune disease and am losing my vision - been visually impaired for a while now. I had self talk telling me, “you can’t play an instrument, cause your going blind.” I got a mandolin ( Washburn) and named it Finn 🤷♀️😜 I discovered you and Doc Watson - a blind player - really transitioned my self talk. Getting your Patreon E Book 👍 Thanks for being so cool and chill and bringing me a way to play Finn 👏

Thanks so much for this series David! Could not be more perfect timing as I just starting playing mandolin the day before the first video in the series! Very helpful to get the right foundational techniques

For picking I need my pinkie as anchor or the right hand is flopping wild all over the place and I hit everything but the right string 😂 I play ukulele for 5 years now and I slowly accept my anchorpinkie.

Hi! You have answered a question I had about gaining right hand stability by using my pinky on the instrument’s surface or pick guard. Thanks very much. Continued success!

Wow, these exercies are extremely helpful, thank you! I'm struggling with only plucking one set of strings at a time and these exercises are great for practicing that too lol

Personally, I try to use only my right wrist and not let my arm move all that much. I've tried several methods and find the loose wrist approach the least tiring. To me, David moving his arm looks tiring, but he's got a method that works for him and is accurate. He can play fast and accurately. Cheers, Bob

Hi David, really enjoying this series so far! I'm coming from guitar, but never learned to use a pick so I've been struggling a lot with right hand techniques. I had a question about alternate picking: do you still play the downstroke on the beat no matter what time signature you're in? For example, if you are playing in 3/4, would it be down up down, down up down? or do you just play down up, down up, down up repeating? Thanks so much for the lessons!

I think my pick angle is wrong but I dont know how because when I try to do the upstroke, I only hit the bottom string. I've tried modifying it a bit but I'm having trouble doing it consistently. Any pointers?

Try rest strokes, and following through on the ups. Best wishes!

Hi David. Thanks for so much high quality material. I'm having a hard time on hitting one string (out of the pair) at a time. Do you have any advice or exercise to improve this skill?
@DavidBenedictMandolin3 жыл бұрын
Hey Leandro! My pleasure-thanks for watching these lessons! I’m afraid that I don’t know any good exercises for picking single strings out the pairs-in fact I always try to play both strings in each pair. Think you get a better fuller sound that way-hope this helps!
