I put an irmire shim under the inner cover and put 2 inches of fondant on top of all frames. If you treated for mites you can close them up and check them in a few weeks and add additional fondant.

Hi David, I have read up a lot regarding bee keeping and really want to start but, there is one thing preventing me from doing so. I don't want any more than two hives, three hives at most. So how do I manage to prevent my hives from increasing or my neighbours every year having to put up with swarms. Please advise as I do feel so strongly about helping the bees but do not want to create a burden for them.

There's ZERO you can do to correct any issues at this point, unless you live in the deep, deep south.

Hello David. I’m located in N Texas and I intend to rent out my bees for almond pollination. I have 150 very strong colonies with the potential to increase the number. Do you know how to get in touch with almond growers?

I don’t think OA hurts them I have never seen any bad results it don’t effect queens I don’t have any dead bees it don’t slow them down at all I think OA is the best it controls mites great 😊

David, what’s your thoughts on bees increasing brood laying when feeding protein powder this time of year? We have been getting mid 50’s here for the last few days and they are absolutely working the protein powder like crazy.

Do bees store any of the winter bee kind. Central Indiana. I like feeding my bees through winter. Hives are packed full of bees. Just wondering.

I definitely don’t ignore my bees! I check on them probably too much! I upload my Broodminder data that tells me how many frames of brood are present, how heavy the hive is, the brood temperature, and more. I also scan them with my FLIR camera and check on their food every week to replace their Hivealive fondant if needed.

I have a list of things to work on. Getting in better shape is at the top of the list. Before getting into bee keeping I watch a lot of videos, and did a lot of research........but no one said anything about being in good shape! In all honesty hive tool, and smoker manipulation is @ the top of the list. Great video David!

I live in South Carolina and this week a wrapped my hives with heavy blankets with a small entry space and will remove in March. Put a sugar/candy board on the tops of my hives to feed them through the winter months.

never knock on beehives in winter!!! rather, they should be left alone until spring. if they are flying around or the temperature is good for the bees, then you can quickly check (1-2 min) the nest from the top without moving the frames !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
