GREAT Video and answers. HAVE A GREAT EVENING AND WEEKEND. ALSO GREAT HOLIDAY!

I chose the Layens hive for the deep frames. I havd had very few starve out of winter. In the spring they can move sideways when it warms up but forage is not yet available. The horizontal hive is easier for me.

I’m moving to all 8 frame deep boxes. I am getting older myself, but having one type of box with all interchangeable equipment helps. The boxes are the same price from Mann Lake, so I feel like I am being ripped off with less material from mediums. Thank you for the QnA!
@keithspillmanАй бұрын
I run all mediums and always have. Makes my life MUCH simpler with less equipment types to worry about. I had 12 production hives this year and made around 1500lbs of honey. I normally use 3 mediums as my brood area which is about the same as a double deep. I'm taking 25 hives into Winter and hope to make about 50% more honey next year. Come on SPRING!!!

Sounds like you are doing very well!

i run all med boxes. it does help with weight. i also take out a few frames before i try lifting it. i thought about adding handles for better grib.
@beekАй бұрын
It does help so much!

I watch a video somewhere of bee's that bit off the legs of the mites which kills them, they where trying to spread those genetics. It was super interesting
@laureldoherty9363Ай бұрын
I used a Keeper’s hive last year and love it. Much reduced lifting. I bought 4 more to replace my standard 10 frame hives.

Could varroa strips be used on the front of a hive where all the bees entering would be treated?
@beekАй бұрын
Most strips need to be inside the hive.
@VelacreationsАй бұрын
I use inline horizontal hives, the frames are inline with each other, so bees travel down the seams just fine.
@beekАй бұрын
I need to try those one day
@schaeferktАй бұрын
For internal insulation, a hive has to be a perfect cube. For that to happen, a Langstroth hive would need to have 11 frames.
@dougpeterson5257Ай бұрын
I would go to shallow supers and if you have to lift deeps use a 4 or 5 frame nuc to transport the frames.

@dennis5009Ай бұрын
David, what about keeping and raising bees in NUCs? Is this possible, advantageous in some ways, since bees like to move up?
@beekАй бұрын
Yes, very possible. I do it. But they run out of space fast. So a bit more management.
@hein1812Ай бұрын
I saw a study where they used hydrogen peroxide to get rid of shb. Worked instantly without affecting bees. Lost the study. Does anyone know?
@shanedavis5787Ай бұрын
David, what are your thoughts on adding a small amount of sulfur to the Oxalic acid Wednesday use to vaporize for mites? Been told this can help with Small hive beetles?
@beekАй бұрын
I cannot bring myself to go beyond the label. Never know what mixing other chemicals could do
@aaronparis4714Ай бұрын
I use 10 frame poly but I like 8 frames better I like 5 over 5 the best I think the bees just grow in 5 over 5
@johnlehr1036Ай бұрын
What about the work that Cory Stephens is doing? Do you have any thoughts on that?
@beekАй бұрын
He like many others are trying.
@kathyhathaway8823Ай бұрын
This time of year there laying patterns are low or not at all . Some kinds of bee do not lay as much late in the season so there may not be any thing wrong with your queen.
@beekАй бұрын
True
@aaronparis4714Ай бұрын
I wish more people would do mite counts and mite treatments they would not lose as many hives as they do
@beekАй бұрын
Yes, so true, I think many beekeepers want to, but life get's in the way. It does for me sometimes.
@aaronparis4714Ай бұрын
@ yes but it depends on how you want to look at it I see my bees like my dogs my horses they are my pets and I would go to jail if I neglected to take care of my dog because life gets in the way lol I make sure I ask when I sell a nuke if they plan to treat or be treatment free if they tell me they don’t plan to treat or they plan to be treatment free I tell them in a nice way I think they should go buy somones else’s bees as I really love my queens and I want them to have a great life I think it should be a law that you have to treat and a government inspected should be going around to make sure in Nova Scotia we can call an inspector anytime to come check on our bees a and they have the right to go to your yards at anytime to do there own checks make sure your not spreading diseases

Bees don't care for the treatments pads and avoid direct contact. This creates a " safe zone" for SHB so they hang out there knowing bees will not bother them.
