Nice Dave! I made a glass arrow head from a beer bottle, and used it to strike a ferro rod, and man did it shower the sparks! Up til that time I never realized you could use various materials to strike a ferro rod. Thanks for posting Brother!

Thats awesome, didnt know you could strike a ferro rod like that. I used to do outdoor electrical work, spent a lot of time with a shovel. One day I found a whole massive sheet of quarts when I was diggin, Grabbed a 5 gallon bucket and filled it, huge chunks of it. Thought it was cool to find so I kept some of it.

Tried a piece of chert I found in my driveway...worked like a charm. Chert and quartz are similar in hardness from what I can gather. All the useless pieces of freeze-fractured chert we have in my area just got useful :)

Good tip. I always thought it had to be a metal object to strike that rod. I've always used old saw blades. One under the ranger band on my sheath of my knife and a few others that o have made smaller through out my kit one in pretty much each pocket in my kit. Even one in my canteen cover.

Dave.. I'm A Veteran Circus Clown with a love for the outdoors... Many clown props shoot sparks.. for instance i got this spark ring that works off of flint.. you load a Zippo flint in it and wind up the key and press the button on the ring and a 2 foot spark explosion shoots out of it.. it's meant to make me look like i'm getting shocked by a microphone but makes a mean fire-starter as well as a great conversation piece once the fire is done... thought i would share. Good day, bud

Everything harder than ferrocerium can be used to get sparks. I've tried (among other things) glass and granite, and the piece of granite I used wasn't even that sharp. It helps, of course, but it's not necessary.

Would a magnesium rod be as effective as mini inferno at catching a spark? It seems it would last longer in an emergency because you could scrape off what you need instead of using all of it like the inferno.

what about rodent teeth (from a dead rat e.g.) or other animals' teeth? are they hard and sharp enough to strike sparks off of the rod as well?

Dave, I have a question. I've seen other videos from other people where their ferro rods have corroded over time. Would it be good to put some fixing wax or tallow on a ferro rod to prevent corrosion? And would that effect a ferro rod and cause it not to spark?

On a sad note, I find lots of broken glass in the back country. The only positive is the broken glass works with a ferro rod as well.

In a situation where you lost your knife, I assume you would not have a micro inferno handy. What tinder would you prefer in these less that ideal conditions that you could collect from your environment?
@Doodeloodeloo
@Doodeloodeloo 12 жыл бұрын
If you can bring a ferro stick and mini inferno, can't you just bring a quality lighter? Takes the same amount of space, and will produce a fire very reliably. I know ferrosticks can be used many times, but how many times do you need to make a fire in a survival situation? 100 times? you can do that with a quality lighter. Just a question, I'm not second guessing the great skills involved in preparation and improvisation. Respectfully, Boris

good info brother, but will differ with one point, yes most ferro rods are alike, but the misch metal rods are much much better than the standard ferro rod. Im sure you have tried them, if not give em a try, i install one on every one of my survival knives with nylon belt webbing and cap screws, looks factory, and holds rod in place. Love the molten metal is shoots off instead of just sparks. life span is shorter than ferro, but results are worth it. especially if its wet conditions. RLTW

I always thought it had to be a piece of carbon steel to get a spark off of one too. This is a great trick to know. I always cringe at the idea of having to use one of my microtechs or Emerson's to strike a spark.

thats really interesting, but if you look into the ferro. then i should have discovered this earlier and not from this video, because as apposed to steel, ferro. scopes off and the ferro burns via friction from the scraping so now i feel pretty stupid
