After YEARS of looking, I finally found a Stevens single shot 12ga with a modified choke and 3" chamber at a gun show. Wood on it was old and pretty beat up, but the gun itself, it's locking and ejecting mechanisms worked perfectly. Purchased a replacement walnut stock and forend, love it!

If you'll stop at the hardware store sometime you can pick up a few straight-slotted countersunk bolts to replace the phillips slotted screws on your H&R forearms and eliminate the need to carry a dedicated phillips screwdriver for disassembly. with a regular slotted head forearm screw you can use a penny, or a P-38 or P-51 can opener, or a shell rim, or myriad other things you already likely are carrying anyway to loosen and tighten the forearm screw. it's not supposed to be too awful tight anyway.

I've worn out two of those Duluth Shell Bags......I love 'em! The flaps wear out on mine before the bottoms because I use them every day for all the crap I carry in my truck, so I'm in and out of it many times throughout the day. Duluth will rebuild them, but the good news is that they will rebuild them with the heavier canvas they use in the larger Duluth packs rather than the mid-weight canvas they normally use in the shell bags if you request it. If you order a brand new one, be aware that they will build them out of the extra-heavy canvas at a slightly higher price if you ask for it.......well worth the extra cost, if you ask me!

I loved your video sir Im a disabled marine and when i hunt I always carry a bag with me. I always enjoy seeing what other woodsman carry in there bags But Unlike you i always carry a back up water for my meds and one or two Commercial trash bags that can be used for a sleeping bag, ponch in the rain or a groung cover too. ** YOUR steel wool also is handy for a fire starter along with a steel. ** NOBODY CARRIES A COMPASS ANYMORE, LOL HAVE A GREAT DAY SIR LOVED YOUR VIDEO

For the outside of my .12 gauge, I use only an excellent grade of car wax. The inside parts get the oil.

I made the mistake of getting the metal oil bottle too hot when burning out the original gun oil. Found out it was soldered together the hard way when it came apart into pieces lol. I wonder if they make one that is all a solid piece of metal. Great video series! Useful and informative.

I alwsys use olive oil too. Mainly on my knifes, though I was told it goes rancid. Yet I am still to get ill from it. It could be that I use my knife and re-oil it regularly rather than leave it in storage for ages so I was wondering if your olive oil on your equipment has ever gone rancid?

I like how you set up you shooting bag, I've changed mine since seeing the video and taken out quite a few things I've carried for years and haven't really used. It's 1/2 the weight now and I've actually forgotten I was wearing it at times. The olive oil is an Outstanding idea. That's probably the best change I've made, and the cost is substantial. Thank you for that tip. Love your site and recommend you to all my friend. I figured I was about the only one who still used a single shot 12. I thing it's the most useful and I can reload dang near as fast as another guy can rack his pump gun

Cool screwdriver. I have one from my grandfather’s ( born in 1901) screwdrivers much like that, but where the loop comes back to shaft, it’s uniformly twisted around the shaft and smoothed out and tapered down. 😁👍

High brass or low brass are equal in reloads. There are cheap weak shells from big box that are too weak to reload. (Tula from Spain) they still work once for blackpowder reloads.

I have an old 12 gauge single barrel shotgun made way back in 1886. at least that's what Google says. anyway, when my grandfather gave it to me I never thought much of it until I watched the videos with Dave. I have copied his tools and haversack exactly. I have also purchased the 3 rifled barrel inserts for my shotgun. extreamly

Dave ,,,take and solder a half penny to the screw on your H@R then you wont need to carry or worry about a screwdriver you can tighten and loosen by hand !!! i did mine 30 years ago and they are still holding strong!!!

i need 2 more 209 adapters yet ; spare 20ga and 2, 410 . tried the 22 smooth rimfire and as you had said b/4 ; key holes about 15-20 yd , but duz shoot fairly consistent. happy hunting , Dave & Iris and company

Ive several chest rigs. Pouches ,need to add some items in , basically i carry my choice of handgun , in them , I carry spare full magazines , the olive oil and cotton rags , add a extra lighter in each 1 too in case the ones on me fail , I need to build something like a haversack again, put in fishing equipment, kitchen matches, oil , rags , lighters , sharpeners, things I use to carry when I was younger , then I could just pick up the pistol caliber I needed for that day or till I got back home in a chest pouch , if I'm deer hunting, I still carry a 22 or 5.7x28mm something small and light . I've been out and a big rain , get water-bound behind streams , have to hunt shelter or make shelter. I must have worried my dad grey haired back in my youth .

You have over 400K followers, drinking straight out of a stream is a dangerous thing! Please consider advising your followers in using a water filtration system while out in the woods.. Yes, get your self out in the bush. However, do it safely, drinking from unknown streams or rivers could be disastrous to your health. Filter or treat your water, should you not know these waters to be safe use the precaution to treat or/and filter the water before drinking. I am taking your advice in using Olive Oil in the cleaning of my firearms and changing a small stainless steel flask for this purpose in my kit. Thanks for an otherwise great video.

A video like that would be me sitting beside a tree in my warm clothes with my hands in pockets, I don't get those type challenge videos as anyone should be able to spend one night in the woods with the cloths on their back and cigarette lighter to be honest, Surviving 2 weeks when you start getting hungry is a different story, but there is plenty of water in the creeks and tons of deadwood for fire, so who is surviving what for one day? That is inconvenient camping to me not survival JMHO

I have the Short Lane .22 adapter 3 inch unrifled. good piece of kit for short shots, 25 feet or so, might have to pick up the longer rifled adapter. for small game. I too carry the homemade bore snake but with a wood stick trimmed like yours thanks for everything. see ya on the boards,EDIT: for my 20 ga Ithica lever action.

Dave, have you considered using Jojoba oil? I've heard that it was used pretty often by our armed forces overseas for many years in firearm maintenance. It's used in skin care products now mostly but it's a relatively inexpensive oil that has historically been used to maintain guns.

Good ideas here, I would have gone with a heavy duty detergent before worrying about burning out any previous oil residue. Heating and burning out the old oil makes good sense too, I'd just say clean it out thoroughly with detergents first.

have you looked into low end load bearing equipment? for what you're doing it seems like it would be a great option. this way you can set up your vest to have things right where you want them. just something to note, I got an offbrand us vest on Amazon for 12 dollars.

Thanks Dave! One question I need to ask. I have a New England single shot 12-gauge, mod. choke and I found out that shooting a winchester 12 gauge slug was not accurate. And since it had such a strong "kick", I thought that maybe it was the choke that was throwing the slug off target. Have you experienced that and what type of slug do you shoot from your single-shot.

Hi Dave. I haven't posted in quite a long time. When you began drinking from the water sources on your property did you ever get sick? Did you began working your immunity up to any bugs that might be in the water. I used to drink out of springs when I was a kid but I would be afraid to now. I have not done it in years. Also what I did with my H&R was cut a slit on the top of the receiver directly in line with my front bead and painted the slit green. It took away any guess work as far as elevation goes for slug shooting. My gun favors Slugger Slugs by Remington. It will put one on top of the other at 25 yards. Shotguns are so ammunition sensitive your gun may favor something else. I have not bothered to shoot it further yet but I got a perfect clover leaf when I tested it off hand. Just a suggestion. I have never been sick on water anywhere in the world so I cant tell you how that works, but as far as the 12GA I have an SB2 receiver on mine and just change to a slug barrel during gun season that has Iron sights, I have another SB that has Iron sites put on by a gun smith as well-

Another helpful video & it really does give food for thought on what's really important. Keep up the great work...winter furs r best for tanning- could U do a video on survival fur tanning. Something to rehash the using of the animals brains & possible show the best sinew/where to find it on different animals so they can b sewn together for fur clothing? Appreciate all Ur great videos.

Olive oil in the can will last a year, but I go through it faster than that, I don't eat the rags so I don't worry about them to be honest with you, but I have never experienced any issues

A note about the variety of carried shotshells... Here in California, I'd love to carry some buckshot and slugs while bird hunting, but this runs afoul of the hunting regs. Which forces me to carry a pistol. Big scary animals/aggressive people aren't going to respect bird shot.

Maybe one or two attempts. It seems like a chain would last forever. Maybe a dog choke chain wrapped a few more times around the spindle would not slip too bad. What are your thoughts?

stryfe2009 funny you mention, recently got a katydin vario pump because of a previous trip in the Appalachians that the spring we've used for 25 years was just a trickle and thank goodness for a sawyer setup a buddy had so we didn't have to deal with the semi stagnant pools in the trickle that once was a nice little spring. . anyways we used the vario for our group of father's n sons and while our spring was in good shape I still filtered everything. . it's absolutely amazing how much particulate matter, ground up microscopic leaf litter, dirt, algae and grit was in that filter when I got it home and did the post trip cleanup. . this water source is definitely what anyone would qualify as good .. stream is fed by 2 springs only a few hundred yards uphill and wells up out of the rocks near the 14 to 1500 ft elevation area of surrounding 1600 ft ridges in this isolated valley .. all these years we've just dipped our canteens, Nalgene bottles, stainless pots and mugs right in there for water and felt it was perfectly okay. . nobody ever got sick, tasted great, clear cool running mountain stream what's to worry about. . but that previous trip during a dry spell last year made me think about a filtration system and after using it on this latest trip I'm never leaving it behind.

Yeah I have quit that practice for the most part unless the gun is rusted bad for some reason or filthy, I have tried to be better at uses of oils, but having a Blacksmith shop makes oily rags very tempting to just pick up and use around the shop. I try not to do that with the guns I carry most now.

Great video ! Did not see any Signal Flares in your Bag ! Also for a Weapon, an Axe and/or chainsaw you will need a Trauma Kit with a Tourniquet ! Also a Glass Lens can break but a Fresnel Lens will bend ! Thank you for the video ! tjl
